Coders, fine. I'll give you that one. But I've been in "tech" for a long farking time and the only people who actually go around calling themselves "hackers" and "makers" are the people the rest of us call "wankers".

*Ding ding ding ding ding*

Damn straight.  I've been in tech for about the last 20 years, I have pretty much always self identified as a techie.

The only people I've ever heard called Techies are the people that handle stage construction for plays/musicals/etc.

So is Trekkie considered an offensive outsider term too? Should we call them Trekkers?

Yup.

"Coder" is acceptable, but if you call yourself a "hacker" or a "maker", you're a giant dripping "douche".

I draw the line when a dev wants to be called an artist.

Hacker doesn't even sound that cool. My college concentration focuses on that, and I prefer thinking of it as intelligence acquisition(might be the military geek in me speaking).

Course, I got so sick of explaining what it is I am learning, I just tell people I do security now.

INeedAName: The only people I've ever heard called Techies are the people that handle stage construction for plays/musicals/etc.

People who do that professionally also find it demeaning.  It's fine in high school, beyond that it's considered an insult.

Let's get this out of the way.

"Techie" is shorthand for "I have no idea what all these people who are younger than me and make more money than me are doing."

2013-12-05 12:36:34 PM
I work in tech, but I have no idea what I'd call myself in relation to that. If I get the infinitely boring "so, what do you do" ice-breaker, I usually just say "computer programmer" and if someone wants to infer "geek," or "techie," or (God forbid) "IT" then that's fine with me. I don't get my identity from them. I get it from myself and I don't identify as the thing I make a living doing.

2013-12-05 12:43:33 PM
As a techie, if someone at work said "I'm a hacker", I would punch them square in the face.

I've been a Star Trek fan longer than many farkers have been alive.  I'm a Trekkie.  Anyone who gets their space-panties in a bunch over the term needs to get a life.

Meh. I smell satire, though I'm not completely sure what's being satirized.
