I considered buying a barrel for it myself, but they cost so dang much it would take me 200 batches to make it worthwhile, probably.

When federal prohibition legislation was passed, effective enforcement of the ban during the Prohibition Era proved difficult and the law was widely flouted. Without a solid popular consensus for its enforcement, Prohibition led to some unintended consequences and its ultimate repeal in 1933

So this was unpopular legislation that passed by a slim margin.   Led to unintended consequences...
and was later repealed.

...sounds familiar.

Once when I was young I rounded the corner by the pool house to find the caretaker and the head maid going at it. She was really into it and from my perspective his dirty device looked like a pickling cucumber - not as thick and veiny as my own however.

That's different. Marijuana has no medical or scientific purposes.

It's absolutely true, Congress voted on it, and nothing has been voted on since then to change their minds.

I moved to Atlanta in '93. For some reason home brewing was still illegal, some legal glitch. I joined the Covert Hops Society, a home brewing club. Then Atlanta got the Olympics, and wanted brewpubs for the tourists. Oops! They rever$ed that real fa$t.

Some farker here talked about the CHS once before with me. We were probably at some of the same meets.

I support marijuana legalization. I suspect it would have the same positive impact on the economy as ending prohibition, but be less dangerous than booze, overall.

Actually, it was ratified by overwhelming margins in most state legislatures. Most of the state legislators who voted for it were elected specifically on dry platforms. Most interestingly, though, were the bedfellows that together pushed for it.

- Women's suffrage movement, because men are always voting drunk and just look at this mess
- Christians (except Catholics, but most stopped complaining when sacramental wine was exempted)
- the Ku Klux Klan, because ******* are an inferior species who can't hold their liquor and thus rape white women
- Progressives, because it's wrong to lynch colored men just because they can't hold their liquor and thus rape white women
- Socialists, because alcohol was used by evil bosses to oppress workers somehow
- Rural farmers (see Christians)
- And they all hated ze Germans, because of that whole WWI buffoonery, and beer is German, ergo Prohibition = Fark Germany
- And ze Germans hated ze Jews, who owned a lot of distilleries, so booze = Jews, ergo Prohibition = Fark Jews (see also KKK)

All groups contributed to the Anti-Saloon League, which got a lot of legislators elected.

But aside from the temperance movement, which was always kind of a sideshow anyway, Prohibition was never a core issue for anyone - the dry platforms that state and congressional lawmakers were elected on were rarely their only issue, but it was a means to an end for myriad other issues that were often bigger deals (women's suffrage, etc). So it accidentally passed by an overwhelming margin.

/Whoopsie-daisy.
//Last Call, great book - highly recommended.
