I'll never understand how people can enjoy seeing such magnificent creatures trapped in cages. And why do Americans and Europeans insist on raping Africa of her natural wonders and then giving the cats African names?  If you really want to respect Africa, return these animals to their natural home immediately instead of sticking them in a stadium like some sort of perverse cheetah minstrel show.

Watching cheetahs run down and ravage media types would have been a much better way to celebrate cheetah day.

Yep. Send them back to Africa so they can be killed by the locals. That's a really good plan there, bubba.

When the only surviving cheetahs are in zoos the species is as doomed as it would be if it were extinct. They would exist solely for our amusement.

Even if the risk of dying is higher in the wild, it's where they want to be, and should be.

42 mph?  that's at least as fast as my 8 month old terrors, er, kittens run around our house at when they are in full-frenzy playtime mode.

/for what are supposed to be the consummate graceful denizens of the animal world, you'd think a herd of wild horses was running through our house when they are in full throttle play phase.  The house shakes like a bowl of jello.

//exaggerating only slightly

They really should have done that during the playoffs.

we have had 3 (lost one last year to cancer at age of 6 and a new boy since). Alice who was slow ran 9 times in the one month she raced and her fastest was 42mph. Jeep who is our new boy of a year who is  4 as of today raced for a year and was stupid fast (46?). our local rescue group had a playgroup that we would take them out to a local baseball field and let them rip. most dogs would run for about five minutes and spend the next 45 on their backs. Since we still run with ours they would keep going. it was amazing watch them go full bore. unfortunately it hasn't happened in a while and we haven't been able to see Jeep go but he would be magnificent

Cheetahs are basically unable to do anything once they're done running. They'd never make it through a 6 minute football game, let alone a 60 minute one. That does qualify them to play for the Texans though.

I've read that they can be tamed. Not domesticated, though. Doesn't that take generations of controlled breeding? Don't think I'd want one as a pet, anyway. I know how hard it can be to pill a domesticated house cat. (Pilling Hazel took a team of three or four, a towel and welding gloves. I really miss that cat.) Not sure I'd want to work with a wild cat.

Cheetah's  are so genetically close that, yeah, any given virus could wipe out a whole group of them. Really, one cheetah won't reject skin grafts from another cheetah. It doesn't even matter. Sooo, it's a good thing that they're mostly solitary.

I grew up in Cincinnati and I'm pretty sure that old woman in the video came to my grade school for a conservation presentation back in the late 70's.  She had 1 year old cheetah on a leash and she lectured us for a full two minutes about how it was a wild animal and we weren't allowed to pet it.  The entire time the cheetah was purring, licking her hand, and headbutting her like a house cat.  If that cheetah was a wild animal, then my house cat is going to kill me one day.

I hope we don't lose them, either. Or any species, to be honest, but the charismatic ones (like the big cats) have a somewhat better shot.

I guess the cheetahs are particularly endearing, not just because of their speed, but because they're underdogs with character. Even wild on the savannah, they are not the biggest, baddest cats out there. Just the fastest. And they don't give a shiat about jeeps.
