The vast majority of things on the road are 2+ ton metal beasts.  You take your life into your own hands when you don't have a metal shell around you, particularly in a tight, busy metropolis with absolutely awful sightlines for driving like San Francisco where the guy in TFA died.  That's not to say people aren't guilty of not being careful enough, but when you're trained towards seeing 99% of vehicles being car sized or bigger, tiny things don't necessarily stick out in your vision when you're looking for threats when trying to merge/turn/etc.  When I looked into a motorcycle for my commute as a way to save money, I decided against putting my life at risk every day because the 405 is stopped for big rigs running over motorcyclists(including cops) at least a few times a month.

Yet somehow in my 24 years of driving cars and trucks I've managed to never cause an accident or get into a fender bender where I was at fault.

If I was in charge everybody would be required to spend at least a year/25k miles on a motorcycle before being allowed to qualify and test for a standard motor vehicle license.  Motorcyclists make better drivers behind the wheel than non-motorcyclists. -2 3-better-behind-the-wheel-of-a-car/23971.html

But I doubt stricter driver training and tighter qualification requirements to keep a standard class C license will ever come to pass.  If any inroads were made to change the current put-in-your-quarter-turn-the-handle-out-pops-a-license system we have in place there'd be a farking violent uprising from the ignorant fat unwashed masses.

Some impatient douchebag made a left turn across his path without looking as Bill was crossing the intersection of Oak and Steiner.  The "I didn't see you." left hook is by far the most common accident for motorcyclists/bicyclists/pedestrians.
