It's interesting how that's entered the collective knowledgebase isn't it?  People assume that the 'three laws of robotics' are there to keep humanity safe from a thinking machine and more importantly that they will work.  The whole point of Asimov and the laws of robotics was to show that any actually smart AI could work around them, cause untold havoc and suffering for humans and not actually break the laws, in fact that's a plot point in several of his books and that bellend of a movie with Will Smith.

His point was that any sufficiently advanced AI couldn't be constrained by hard and fast rules like that, the only way to control it is to be friendly to it and say "please".
