Not China? Come on...it's not like they're going to use them to make poutine.

That's pretty righteous.  Too bad the U.S. doesn't have their spay/neuter laws.  Plus, the prices there put them out of range for abusive/neglectful owners.  Win-win.

I'm a Pomeranian.

If your spay/neuter laws are so strict that dogs have to be imported into the country because they cannot be replaced domestically, then that's a problem.  The point of those laws is to prevent homeless strays, not to create an artificial shortage.

Home owners, turned out of their homes, turned out their dogs and cats -- or left them behind to die indoors.

I've alway thought that only scumbags would want to live in Vegas. Prejudice confirmed.

There's a shortage of abused and and neglected dogs and kittens dumped in a box by the highway.

That is the point.

If you rtfa, the situation appears to go far beyond that.

Regardless of the article, trust me, we don't have a shortage of dogs and cats in Canada. Wow, I just..I mean, really? You believed that? These guys just found a cheap market to buy in with shots/neutering already in.

No it doesn't. I can leave my privately bought dog unfixed here in BC. If I get it from a shelter it must be fixed. This also applies to most pet stores which are few and far between. Also, we do have shelters, they just aren't as full.

Most people here look at animals as a huge responsibility and think nothing about bringing their dog over when they visit. Rarely do you see strays and animals unattended.

Thanks for straightening that out.  Stupid Yahoo.  Their articles suck. And appear to be flat out lies to boot.

I find it extremely unbelievable that we don't have puppy mills here in Canada.
Oh look what I found on the link of a Google search....

Shocking as it may seem, I haven't committed to memory the animal control laws for the 200+  countries (and countless local jurisdictions) where I don't live.

The fact that animal importation is commercially profitable would seem to be solid evidence of high prices (higher than whatever it costs to fly a dog from Las Vegas to Canada, anyway).  High prices are usually indicative of a tight supply.

Bob Barker approves this message. Spay or neuter your pets.

While you're at it, spay or neuter Bob Barker, the randy old coot.

This has been going on for years. When I volunteered at the local SPCA five years ago, the shelter got 10 out of around 80 dogs from Los Angeles. Almost all of them chihuahua or chihuahua mixes.

If there is anything you can say about Pekes, it's that they make damn poor sled dogs.

What a good sled dog might look like

He's no dummy, that dog. Why sled when you can toboggan?

Holly Marquardt, a Las Vegas real estate agent, tells the Las Vegas Review Journal that she has found 18 dead dogs and cats in foreclosed houses in the past three years.

I know JUST what to do with the former owners.

/Sorry real estate lady
//you have to divulge that information before selling
///think that was a CSI episode

Shouldn't they be called Beijingese? Kind of like Zimbabwean Ridgebacks.

Why adopt an animal from a shelter hundreds of miles away instead of from a shelter closer to home?
