My son-in-law took me to lunch and asked for my blessings to marry my daughter.  I had no reservations about it, but told him there was only one condition:  "If you make her cry, I will make you cry."  After six years, no tears by either one!

My Fiancee's dad looked me over and said "I'm not calling you D just Dragyne" (Modified for my real name obviously)This guy is 6'2-6'3" 300 lbs of blue collar dock worker with a record to boot, (we sometimes get things that fell off the boat)..   Fast forward to about a year later.

"D!"
"Um.. yes sir?"
"You call me Dad from now on got it?"
"Yes... dad?"

Unless they've been shaking hands since '75 the record is safe.

At what point does it cease to be a handshake and become awkward / creepy hand holding?

Oh its waay more than hand holding - this dude is a meth addict - and being polite all the time is painful (generally I want to stab him ... but I am not allowed too :(

I know the headline was a joke, but out of respect for your soon to be father in law and his relationship to his daughter, you really should ask for his blessing before asking her (meaning that you shoul have met before she was your fiancé). You are taking away his little girl after all.

So, she's the property of her father, with no free will of her own? What if he says yes, but you haven't actually asked her, and she says no?

I hate to be obtuse, but I would think that consulting your spouse-to-be first is a better idea.
