What. Is the obvious tag on vacation?

The unknowable is unknowable.

Religion sure doesn't know what's beyond the edge of the universe, and neither does science.

There very well may be dragons out there. Or some intelligence that created the universe, but we've got no proof one way or the other.

All we know about "god" is that he appears to give no farks about humans. Which is good enough reason for me not to worship whatever "god" might be, if "god" exists at all.

Atheists though. They claim to KNOW "god" doesn't exist, despite humanities obvious ignorance of an enormous universe.

Theists claim to KNOW "god" DOES exist. Because of humanities obvious ignorance, and some dusty old books.

They are two sides of the same coin.

False. You got pretty far before the usual "both sides are bad" false equivalency, though.

I suppose that's a fair statement, in the same sense that I KNOW "santa" doesn't exist. In the same sense that I KNOW "unicorns" don't exist...or witches and warlocks, werewolves, elfs and goblins and other magical creatures, despite my obvious ignorance of an enormous universe. So?

But it certainly doesn't warrant a "religion".

If I told you there was a Jupiter-sized object just outside of the observable universe made entirely from denim, most people would say "Bullshiat" or "prove it," not "yeah, maybe, I don't know."

That's a common and stupid argument. Your examples are specific characters or creatures in mythology. An agnostic says he doesn't know that there isn't some higher power, something more advanced than us out there. That's a lot different than specifically naming unicorns or Santa.

Here is what it comes down to for me.   One of two things are going to happen when I die:

1. Nothing
2. Something so awesome and incredible that no mortal person on earth really knows what it will be.

I don't claim to know if it will be 1 or 2, but, either way, everything else is just human constructs to help most people cope with the uncertainty of life.

For me it comes down to:

1) God was invented by men to explain the universe
2) Religion was invented by men to control other men

Isn't this what the Skeptics' Society is for? Although I suppose there are atheists who believe in conspiracy theories or cryptozoology or alien abductions etc. But as someone who is a theist (a revitalised Catholic since Pope Francis has come one the scene), I can entirely respect those who seek the social benefits that faith communities enjoy without signing on to the beliefs they follow.

A word of caution, though. Self-important boors can appear in any community and appoint themselves in a position of authority. Keep these people in check, they can suck the joy out of any group.

What is actually "Christian" in the Christmas traditions

a Manger? The gifts of the Magi? some of the songs,  mind you these are all out of season, but it's tradition and fun

Some do.  Some do not.  But go ahead and lump them all into two categories if that will make you feel better.  It will, however, not make you right.

Makes sense.

When you set up such a sweet deal for organizations in your society, so long as you call it a "religion," you're going to get this sort of shiat. And since it's always been a tactic of their detractors to label them a religion for whatever reasons that must make sense to them, these jokers have a leg up on the competition -- and they don't even have to make up some wacko spiritualist philosophy to pass off as legitimate. (Though they still wind up doing so, because it's what people do.)

So, if like-minded people get together to talk about a subject then it is suddenly a religion?  That means that hunting, knitting, sports, drinking, protesting, reading, and eating are all religions now, right?
