Only fact that matters: It's hilarious

2013-12-03 07:59:21 PM
I swear I'm not being contradictory just for the sake of it here, but I don't get the massive boner people have over this movie.  Yes it was really good, but not THAT good.  Not so good that people should still be quoting it 9 years later.  Not so good that Will Ferrell doing publicity stunts as Ron Burgundy on a local TV station should be national news.

Does it get bonus points just because it's so rare for Hollywood to crap out a genuinely good movie these days?  Or is it just manufactured hype because of the sequel?

1. The movie could have starred completely different actors.

I hate this "fact". Damn near every movie could have starred completely different people. It's why they have try-outs and all that. Hell Tom Cruise was considered for the part of Tony Stark in Iron Man. Now it seems crazy, but he was in there.

Contrabulous Flabtraption: Only fact that matters: It's hilarious

No, it isn't. It's not even amusing.

This thing is gonna be bad. The first was good, and this is just gonna be recycling jokes/schtik. I'd be happy to be wrong, but I doubt it. If they are advertising a movie that shouldn't need any, something is wrong with it. They advertise this one quite a bit.

It is an astounding amount of marketing.

Incorrect.

Them cutting the other story line out was the best thing they could have done for the film. "Wake up Ron Burgundy" was a novel concept and kinda cool how they were able to stitch together a whole other movie but good lord it sucked.

I have high hopes for this one, but comedy sequels don't have the best track record.

11)  The Ron Burgundy hype machine all over the media makes me want to drive a Porsche into a pole with Will in the passenger seat.

Meh. I'll wait until it hits the local dollar theatre.

That's very true. Even a lot of the best comedies peter out at the 45 minute mark, nevermind making a whole other movie. Even the sequels that are okay are never as good as the originals.

2. The original plot featured a cannibal Ron Burgundy

I think I've seen that somewhere before...

Agreed, except for Christmas Vacation and Clerks 2. I think both of those were better than the originals.

No way is Christmas Vacation better than the original but we'll just agree to disagree.

Now that I know Christina Applegate's character is based on Jessica Savitch, I can see it. I wondered who she reminded me of (Savitch died when I was a teen but my mom watched her all the time so I know of her).

The book about her, "Almost Golden" is sad. Here she is, drunk on air.

I don't even know if i'd categorize Christmas Vacation as a sequel, since, unlike the others, it wasn't a road movie. I guess I'd call that one a spinoff.

"Stranger Than Fiction" was quite good. I would suggest it's a movie you shouldn't avoid just because it has Ferrell in it.

I did not like the movie the first time I saw it, nor did I care about it the second time. But an ex loved it and I watched it with her and by god after the third viewing I found it to be incredible.

It ages well.

I have seen "Everything...." on the Netflix marquee and passed it up. Worth watching?

Does he run and flail in tighty whities? I can skip that. A serious turn - I'd like to see that. Many comedians nail drama.

I love that Will Ferrell went to considerable effort here in Australia to promote Anchorman 2, and his publicist basically undid it all by bringing a radio announcer to tears for mispronouncing his last name.

The simple answer is the correct answer. You are wrong. It is that good.

It's a serious turn. Uneven in places, but pretty good.

By and large, I've noticed comedians, especially standups, are better in dramatic parts. Just look at Chris Rock in New Jack City and Denis Leary in Rescue Me.

My favorite part is the guy who loathes everything involving Will Ferrell, yet hasn't seen what is widely thought of as his best comedic role. And the fact that they really need to tell everyone how much they hate him in a thread about that role, a thread they could have easily skipped.

At the rate they're going, a lot of people are going to be exhausted with Ron Burgundy by the release date what with the ubiquitous hype. I'm sure it will still open well, but beyond that, I dunno.

That and Winter Passing. Anchorman was amusing but generally his comedy wears thin pretty fast to me. But for myself at least, he does very well in more straightforward roles. I wish he would do more of that.

It succeeded in spite of Will Ferrell instead of because of him?

Not a big fan of his, a good supporting cast helps though. If he has a good cast around him the movie is usually good. See also talladega nights.

You know, I hate to say it, but I don't think he would have been all that bad.
He would have had to 'act' a little, be the smarmy, womanizer which I don't think I've seen Tom play before in a movie.  He's generally the "nice" guy, but I honestly don't think he would have been 'awful'
