Ironically, the article in itself is an example of the War on Christmas.

Still too long. The article, in it's entirety, should have read: "There is none."

Here's everything you need to know about the "War on Christmas."

The New Testament states many times that dying for your faith, or being persecuted for it, is the fast track to heaven. Ergo, believers in the text of the New Testament will imagine wild and elaborate plots of persecution against themselves.

The only war on Christmas is how advertisers like to squeeze the shopping holiday slower and slower before Thanksgiving and the Christmas music that saturates you after Halloween.

Where's the war coverage on THAT front, fundies?

What's the best type of assault rifle or similar to take out the muzak speakers playing the same damn "Christmas Carols" over and over again?

bmongar: The article did not in fact say the only thing you need to know about the war on Christmas .  That is "There is no war on Christmas"

This is often repeated, but to our nuttier Conservative friends, the "War on Christmas" is a very real phenomenon, just as they thought Benghazi was a "Real" scandal. The article wasn't that bad, it left out the most important fact, that there is "NO Organized 'war' on Christmas", but I appreciate the fact that the John Birch society and anti-communist fervor in the 50's was the start of this modern day persecution complex that unfortunately is very real in the minds of many conservatives. Of course, it's like the Great Pumpkin, conservative belief in this "Infromation" doesn't make it true.

BUT--Since I mentioned the Great Pumpkin, it seems that everybody forgets the fantastic Peanuts Christmas Special. Besides the fact that it's a terrible downer to watch, it does have a great message--Charlie Brown was depressed as hell because Christmas was too commercialized...And everywhere. This article is a reminder that once in American history, Christmas wasn't a capitalist celebration of Supply Side Jesus that starts before Hallowe'en. Charlie Brown is right, there should be LESS Christmas, everywhere. It's a personal holiday, for those of faith and their families. And for somebody who is an atheist, I agree. I don't need to see so many lights and appropriated pagan symbols everywhere. I don't want to be told "Merry Christmas" or even "Happy Holidays" for nearly 3 months straight (now). The conservative "War on Christmas" myth is just a way to inject Christian values into an already abhorrent commercial exercise already forced on every American. And that sucks.

HairBolus: What's the best type of assault rifle or similar to take out the muzak speakers playing the same damn "Christmas Carols" over and over again?

I would recommend a pistol calibre carbine. Light, easy to use and conceal, with more than enough punch to turn any speaker blaring Christmas music into debris.

Holidays are people now?

Unlike abstract concepts, people can be harassed/persecuted and have their rights infringed upon. The somewhat hyperbolic might want to call systematic oppression of a particular group (women, gays, etc.) a "war."

This year:
I heard a Christmas song on the radio on October 30th.
One local station switched to 24-7 Christmas format November 1st.
Christmas sales started Thanksgiving afternoon.

This war on Christmas is so successful, it has almost fully absorbed one holiday and is working on another.

Weird. I guess the strike-throughs aren't working on your end (I see them just fine, I thought I'd screwed up.) "War on Christmas"- pure, unadulterated whining about people being inclusive

"War on Women"- hyperbole to describe Republican lawmakers' repeated attempts to restrict the rights of women

Are you really too stupid to spot the difference between infringing rights and some people upset about a phrase?

I like you. i think you have this whole thing reversed.

there IS a war on women waged by the Conservative Republicans in office at both the state & federal levels.

there IS no war on Christmas.

Name one Democratic lawmaker attempting to pass laws restricting the display of Christmas displays, banning the phrase "Merry Christmas", cutting Christmas as a Federal Holiday, or scaling back the size and dimensions of holiday displays.

Because buddy, I can name a LOT of Republican lawmakers passing laws restricting safe and legal abortion, banning oral contraception, cutting Birth Control out of women's healthcare, and putting draconian restrictions on Women's Health Clinics, all while singing "Rape isn't so bad" like it's a chorus of "Silent Night".

No...bad analogy. Solstice festivals have been around since the beginning of people--all that's changed is the name. The rationale for having a big party around the longest night of the year may vary from culture to culture (to bring the sun back, to appease the gods, to celebrate the birth of Mithras or Jesus) but it's all the same thing. It's not made up. It's a great night to have a party.

The "War on Christmas" is very real, and is being waged entirely by Fox News.

Every absurd story you hear about how some school decided they weren't allowed to have red and green decorations because they were afraid of being sued? Those are always the direct result of Fox's WoC propaganda.

The "War on Christmas" narrative is one of the more perfect examples of a loss of privilege being perceived as persecution.

Other then Republican lawmakers *actually* passing laws that restrict healthcare for women and force them to not have abortions. The "War on Christmas" is made up with literally not a single law passed that forces you to not say Merry Christmas.

But you already knew that.

This.

The "war" on Christmas consists entirely of:

A.) "People don't say the holiday greeting that -I- want them to say!!!"
B.) "Retailers are mindful that they have customers of many faiths and/or lack thereof, and don't behave as if -MINE- is the only one!!!"
