I had a friend who spent a summer in FL with her sister, and she evidently made friends with a manatee.... She went out to hang her feet off the dock into the water every day, and just as often a certain manatee would show up to spend a while hanging out and occasionally bumping up against her feet.

Don't know how true it is, but it makes a charming story.

probably true. they are quite intelligent and very docile. in Crystal River, they have sanctuary areas roped off during peak season, the manatees know damn well where they are, and pick and choose when they want to come out for some fun. it's not unusual for specific manatees to get a reputation of showing up at the same place every day to play with the tourists getting in the water.

That is pretty cool. I would pay to play with them.

I was in the water there earlier in the day that video was taken.  I took a trip with one of the swim with the manatee tours.  The water is about 72-75 degrees F.  To get an idea of what that feels like fill your tub and let it come to room temperature.  It is "Brisk" and if you don't move the water around your body will warm to almost tolerable.  About the same effect the wet suit had if you kept still like you are supposed to.

There are a lot of restrictions, some of which were covered in the link, one they didn't mention in the link is your legs need to float behind you.  You aren't allowed to be upright near the manatee (which this person seems to be).

I thought it was illegal to interact with a manatee... or is that prohibition only applicable to annoying them? And who decides what pisses them off?

Unless you were in Citrus County when you thought that, you thought correctly.

I went snorkeling with manatees about 15 years ago, when things were less strict. It's sad that the rules had to change, but looking at all the idiot tourists I can see why.

aww, isn't it cute when animals engage in human-like activities?  So cute.

Is it lunch time yet?  I could really go for a burger.

//veggie burger, that is

From what I understand, It is except in crystal river.  Even there you are only allowed to touch them if they come up to you, and with a single hand as seen in the video.

It seems like they are making a population comeback, but are also required to move further north each year as the ocean temperature rises.

you cannot pursue or approach them. you have to let them come to you, and you can reach out and pet them with one hand. can't feed them or anything like that. if they swim away you cannot follow at ALL. And as mentioned in the link, Citrus county is the only county in the state that allows ANY interaction.

Pretty sure any interaction was on the manatee's part as was told to me. I can't say firsthand, but they seem very sweet critters. I would not kick a manatee bumping my feet.

Can we just let these things go extinct already? It's so slow and dumb it has goddamn algae growing on its back. If a human was that fat and lazy, we'd be calling for its death, but this thing gets a pass because it lives underwater? Kill it and eat it.
