One of the first AIDS victims in NYC lived in my grandmother's building and the residents freaked out when he died. The Department of Health came in and sterilized his whole apartment. They did everything but paint a black cross on the door although I believe they painted the door white for some reason..

The comments are gold. We really can't have nice things.

Bizarrely, I grew up in the South in the 80s, and somehow my sex-ed classes were intelligent, informed, and entirely lacking in this sort of thing. I remember talking to kids from other schools, and they laughed like this. I didn't get it at the time.

Now, I look back on this, and I am absolutely amazed and grateful that I lucked into the education that I did. It should NOT have been possible, in that place and time.

I only vaguely remember these conferences.  But I do remember the indifference.  And I remember my parents' own uninformed hysteria.  Sadly, they were not unique.

They told me they'd pull me out of high school if we had a Ryan White there.
