About the only place this couldn't happen is Texas and some of those rectangle states in the middle:

Once the unidentified woman broke free, she ran to a nearby house, where the resident called 911.

Since she didn't get shot I'm guessing she's white.

That map is outdated or just wrong.
There are black bears in some of those gray states.
I've seen them.

A bit surprised one attacked a human. Unless it's a mom with cubs, black bears in the South act like overgrown racoons except that racoons are more likely to stand their ground and hiss at you. Maybe it was startled or sick.

You lack of adherence to geographic naming conventions annoys me, subby.

Yeah, that area is right next to a huge forest. A buddy of mine was walking his dogs last night and got real close to a big buck.

Florida should have never let Zimmerman leave the state.

Florida has:

Bears
Panthers
Alligators
Crocodiles
Sharks
Coyotes
3 species of Rattlesnake
Water Moccasins
Coral snakes
giant Pythons and Boa's
Killer Bees
Monitor Lizards
Locals with a CCW

It's pretty dangerous here. Stay away

No helpful description of the suspect?  You know - what the bear may look like?

You left out cougars, parrots and mangos.  Maybe Panther and cougar is the same.  I always think of panthers as black (or pink).  Regardless it's an excuse to post this Florida relevant pic.

/Also want to promote my not relevant motto for Florida.
What happens in Vegas stays in vegas, but in Florida you can get away with murder.

It's almost like our own little Australia, but not as venomous.

I can't believe somebody beat me to the black bear range map.

And thanks to accidentally clicking out of the thread before posting, I just noticed that I was beaten to the Australia reference, so I can't do that either

I am just going to go buy my lunch. I'll be alright by the time I get back.

You take a state rich in wild lands and wild life, then develop 75% of it, removing close to 30% of the natural ground cover and altering the lay of the land dramatically and push the existing wild life into extinction or smaller and smaller pockets and something is going to happen.

Usually, it tends to be the smaller animals that adapt, like Raccoons, Opossums, rats, mice, squirrels and several species of bird. Artificially bred and protected larger species, like alligators, which are tough predators to begin with along with a large selection of local snakes.

Of course here, in Florida, you need to account for the imported, illegal, released or escaped large lizards and constrictors, which, with no natural predators, thrive.

There's not much available space for the big wild predators anymore in the state. They're going to bump into folks a lot more as development wipes out their normal hunting zones.

The major jump in population has contributed to not only an increase in sharks off the coast lines, but the endangerment of many previously plentiful game fish and even what was commonly termed 'garbage' fish.

Around my home, when I was a kid, we had the occasional panther, bobcat, skunk and maybe the elusive small fox. They're all gone now because every single acre around me has been turned into homes. Even the big citrus groves, decades old, which provided hunting grounds for a host of wild life, have been plowed under and turned into developments.

Major canals, which used to run, stream-like, with clear, shallow water, now hold deeper, dark, murky waters, often polluted.

So, this story doesn't surprise me.
