Can we PLEASE revoke Fox's First Amendment privileges?  Please?

Because Muslim girls want to swim, but cannot reveal too much skin, the pool is cleared out for an hour.

THIS FAR AND NO FARTHER!

Anyone who is against the bikini will find an enemy of me!!

How do right wingers even leave the house, considering how scared shiatless they are of even little girls?

I'm of two minds on this.

On one hand, as a swimmer who likes to swim laps at the pool and whose YMCA always has one lane of the pool reserved for lap swimming, this would be an annoyance if it were during a time of day I came to swim laps.

On the other hand, allowing them to learn to swim and potentially not drown if they end up in the water is certainly a good thing, and I'm always for more people learning to swim (as long as they're not clogging up the lap lanes :P ).

As far as biatching about special considerations? Meh. We give plenty of them to all different groups. This doesn't seem particularly onerous on too many people. Closing the men's locker room seems a bit excessive though- at most Y's I've been to you could just lock the door from the men's lockers into the pool and be perfectly fine.

The YMCA here has "women over 50 only" classes. No one else allowed.

I think that's what they are doing. They don't say which door they are locking, but I would guess they are locking the pool side door.

Now, I'm no expert on this topic but for halal wouldn't they have to make sure the water was pure? You're trying to tell me that some kid hasn't jumped in the pool with meat that wasn't killed by a Muslim on them?

You know, all those precautions arn't being taken to protect those young ladies from Fox News reporters. They are being taken to protect them from the radical element in their own religion. All they need is some male to get in there and see less than completely clothed Muslim females. The people at the YMCA have their hearts in the right place on this one, they don't want this little activity to lead to honor killings.

I thought that the rules about separating men and women in Islam didn't apply to children (under the same premise that women don't have to wear the head coverings or beekeeper outfits until they have their period). Sure all religions make up crap that isn't even in their sacred texts and then try to enforce it... but even though I think its stupid to think that sharia is creeping its way into America because of this or anything else, I also think its stupid to cater to these idiotic ideas that aren't even part of the religion. So I may be torn on this other than YMCA is a private association and if they want to cater to people who believe silly things that I disagree with, they can do it as long as no one is actually being hurt.

My opinion is these kids are stuck dealing with a stupid religion that their parents shoved on them. If the YMCA can teach a few of them to swim, good on them. Ignore the stupid religious crap. It's good for the kids.

I guess by going along with the backwards notion that we have to separate children by gender, YMCA is doing the opposite of promoting change. But at least the girls get to enjoy swimming and have some fun. And there's always television, peer pressure and college just waiting on the sides, ready to corrupt them as they get older.

Small steps, I suppose.  If you have to keep the group separated in order to get them in the door and expose them to the activity, it's the best accommodation.  You can't start with the goal.

Yeah, cover up your filthy dirty bodies.
You should be ashamed.
Having female genitalia and all.
It's disgusting.

That is not so much sharia law as it is demeaning to all women on this planet.
We need to put the men's heads on pikes and show the ladies what happens to men who disrespect the female form. These are the guys that toss acid in women's faces, shoot girls for getting an education, rape them and then stone them for adultery, and just plain old need killin'

Man, Minneapolis-St. Paul sounds pretty intense.

The real story here is that Fox news isn't reporting that the Young Men's Christian Association has been taken over and subjugated by women who aren't even christian. I thought that would have been the bigger issue.

2013-12-02 05:22:51 PM
While FOX/Heather etc is definitely on the derp side I don't understand why the 'Y' needs to shut down the entire pool and locker rooms just for these girls.  If it's a one time event sure no problem but if it's a regularly schedule class then yes I do have an issue.

If the religion forbids 'showing skin' then the onus is on the parents of these girls to cover them up and not demand that the entire poll is off limits to every men and every other non Muslim paying member. Last I check they sell full bodied swimwear specifically designed for Muslim/conservative girls.

Pretty sure none of this is happening with any real frequency in the US, where this is taking place. And since the only issue with Sharia you mentioned that's relevant is the 'covering up' part, do you suggest the same for the Christian sects that require women to wear long-sleeved shirts and full-length dresses?

/Personally, I disagree with the religious dress code, but understand that you really can't force people to NOT adhere to that sort of religious law, as it doesn't conflict with US law.

Depending on who runs it, the YM/YWHA may be able to accommodate Muslim sex-separated religious requirements. I grew up in a primarily secular Jewish neighborhood, so this wouldn't hold true there, but in an Orthodox area, maybe it would?

So if I get this straight, an organization which gets government funding is holding "separate but equal" classes based on gender, religion and nationality yet Fark ProgressivesTM don't have a problem with this segregation and government involvement with religion?

But if a private business wants an exemption from a government law based on religious reason that is bad?
But giving government funds to a religious based charity to help the poor is bad?
If a government school wants to teach creationism that is also bad?
If a government school wants to set a side time to allow for individual students prayer that is also bad?

I am too. I know you're being sarcastic because you've created a fantasy universe that proves you're right but in the fantasy universe I've created to prove myself right not only do Farkers treat your scenario with an equal amount of tolerant disinterest but dinosaurs have replaced cars as the preferred method of travel.
