I think this Pope is a kind atheist who has trolled the Catholics.

I'm an apatheist, but if I had to choose a religion, this pope is taking the tarnish off of Cathlocism to move it up the list.

I see Frankie P brought his mate gourd with him to the Vatican.

Finally, a Pope who has actually heard of this Jesus guy! I'm positive that's one of the signs of the apocalypse or something...

Seriously, though, I like this Pope. Whoda thunk a church leader would actually be a Christian in this day and age?

I hear the priests are fine with being diddled.

"Pope Pius XII would dress as a Franciscan during WWII to assist with efforts to smuggle Rome's Jewish population to safety."

And by "safety" he means "the Gestapo".

Rumors of past Popes sneaking out of the Vatican are plentiful, including the stories that Pope John XIII would sneak out to walk and enjoy the beauty of Rome at night or that Pope Pius IX would personally solicit groups of prostitutes to come to the Vatican for his week-long orgies.

I really like this Pope. I suppose we sometimes forget that as Bishop of Rome he has pastoral duties in particular to that particular community in addition to the Church as a whole. Having called for the Church to be battered and bruised with the down and out, it's good to see him walk the walk too.

His example makes me want to be more active as a Catholic in performing good works as well. I think I've been too passive.

Yes, it is good when a church leader shows compassion instead of intolerance.

Is that too liberal a point of view?

it is antithetical to the republican point of view, which is, "fark you; i've got mine."

Might be fun to see, if after Frank's first few years as Ill Papa and church attendance rises (not a given by any means, though), how Bill Donohue and the other "FARK EVERYONE WHO ISN'T AS CATHOLIC AS I AM. LOOK HOW JESUSY I AM." Catholics/religious leaders take it.

They'll ignore the hell out of the inclusiveness and tolerance Pope Francis preaches and say something about the light of god entering our souls, or somesuch. Never underestimate a religious leader's ability to miss easy and obvious signs (not all of them of course, but when their influence relies on how big a frenzy they can whip up, you won't find them preaching deliberation in public).

// what's the quote from the 1950s? "Isn't it something how the motives of the religious always seem to line up with what they hear from their god"?

barneyfifesbullet: Suddenly, Democrats say it's just great for a church leader to be involved in politics.

Actually, he preaches a separation of religion and politics because they deal with two different matters. In practical terms, he believes a person should be informed by his religion, but he shouldn't push force his religion on others, rather, he should look for the wisdom in other beliefs. He's like a true American. He's unpopular among right-wingers.

This sounds like a Monty Python sketch.  I somehow imagine him in his pope outfit, with a trenchcoat thrown over it, color turned up, doing a poor job concealing the big pointy hat.  Over exaggerated light stepping all the way.

My bad side says that popes claim a lot of shiat.

as the people around me say, it would take a jesuit to direct the church to be interested in the poor.

/ or something like that.  i went to a jesuit law school, so everybody's all, hooray jesuit pope!  i have to admit, i'm not always a fan of catholic orders, but when I am, i prefer the jesuits.

Oh wow, I love his argument, which is just "that's Marxism" and "the pope would never have said that 50 years ago". At no point does he ever say why those things are wrong. It's classic "b-bu-but SOCIALISMS".

Francis is on track for me for best Pope.

Really, Rush? The only real issue between religion and Marxism/ socialism/ communism is in which narcissistic, self-serving entity they worship. What gospel verse begins, "When Jesus' workday was ended..."? In truth, religion is all about avoidance of personal responsibility. In the very first book of the bible, the supposedly omnipotent creator leaves a couple of morally relativistic "toddlers" alone with pure evil, then blames them for their own corruption, and then punishes all of humanity for it.

Plenty of hypocrisy on both sides of the argument

2013-12-02 02:44:56 PM
