Do you think when your last name is "Morgan" and you just happen to be a Captain, you get some extra scrutiny regarding alcohol testing?

No drama.  They should have photographed this in a hanger with Smaug machines and light reveals.

What is this Smowg he speaks of?

Shouldn't they use paint rather than decals? Those decals look like they would add weight and hurt aerodynamics.

Holy shiat I've been yelling about this since I saw the trailer, it's fingernails on a chalkboard

Unfortunately, the flight takes four hours and you only get 1/3 of the way across the country

the weight added by the decal is likely minmal when compared to a load of passengers, fuel and luggage/cargo.

as for aerodynamics its likely not a factor or not enough of one beyond a slight adjustment in fuel loads.

I'd be highly alarmed if an aircraft that size couldn't handle some stickers.

same here.  that said i'd not risk a decal like that on similar sized aircraft in nations where maintenance is not as strictly adhered to.

If I were flying Sumali Airlines or Air Guatamala I'd be nervous even without the decal.

They should have painted everything outside the dragon blue to match the sky.

Bilbo pronounces it that way in the trailer too. They must say it that way in the commonwealth.

Here in the good 'ol USA its rhymes with smog.

No kidding , i'd be afraid they were using the Fark squirrel to spin the engine turbines.

So does the plane have one very small missing hatch on the belly, where it is unusually vulnerable?

You have to catch it when its landing gear are down.

/I wonder if Smowg flies to Owstralia.

Paint would require an amazing team of artists and cost a fortune.   They can yank the sticker and chuck it when the movie is on DVD in another two weeks.

/it looks like a giant....

Nah, thats only on the DC-10 version.

(Lets see if anyone gets THAT reference)

Hopefully nothing happens when the plane is flown in to China's newly proclaimed airspace.

Yes, in the Commonwealth we do in fact pronounce it correctly, in the manner explicitly stated by Tolkien.  Per Wikipedia footnotes on the pronunciation:

Tolkien, J. R. R. "Appendix E - Writing and Spelling: I. Pronunciation of Words and Names". The Lord of the Rings.: "All these diphthongs were 'falling' diphthongs, that is stressed on the first element, and composed of the simple vowels run together. Thus ... au (aw) as in loud, how and not laud, haw."

/But what would he know, he's only the ow-thor

Because they pronounce it to rhyme with 'smog' in both the 1977 version of the movie and the 1978 Lord of the Rings, I really want to say that these New Zealanders are really the ones to blame.

Anyways, saw this yesterday: looks like a lame dragon. People said Vermithrax pejorative was the best looking dragon, but I think it's got to be Shooting Star or Narse are the best.

Came here to quote this. Been calling him "Smowg" since the 1970s when I first read that appendix.

/ American, Southern accent
// Reads appendices, unlike those who pronounce it "Smog"

Has to be cooler than the Hello Kitty jet.

/ not kidding. Saw it parked in Narita, figured I had reached the end of civilization.

So there is a dragon decal on the plane.  yawn.

Would be cooler if the whole plane were painted AS the dragon.
