Kinda hard to join a gang if you're not allowed out of the house, isn't it? I blame parents who are afraid to let their children play outdoors.

You know, maybe we've been too hard on helicopter parents.

Who's for giving them drones to mind the kids when they can't be with them? Do I hear a Whoaaaa, Bundy?

When my generation heads off to the Old Folks Home, we'll be wearing Motley Crue t-shirts and have purple Mohawks.  And the kids wiping our butts will be paunchy 30-year-old virgins with a Ph.D. in Financial Derivative Marketing who can't wait to get home and play Accountant Tycoon.

Well to attract recruits gangs need to be more showy and have choreographed singing/dancing like on Broadway.

Farxist Marxist: I doubt most gang-bangers know who their parents are.

73% of Blacks, 53% of Hispanics born in non-married households, so that would be a good guess.

Joining gangs means having to actually work at something, take on responsibilities, respect elders/leaders, and have loyalty. That is simply too much to ask for these days.

Much easier to just play the knock-out game when it's convenient for you.

Joining a gang is a lot of work. Why go through the trouble of a gang initiation when you can join totalFark?

I heard from my neighbor who heard from her nephew who is friends with a cop that there's this gang initiation going on right now so that if you flash your headlights at someone then they will follow you to Wal-Mart and play the knockout game on you.

These days you can get all of your camaraderie by joining a gang in some online game. This way you never have to leave the couch or be more than a few feet away from the refrigerator.

The only gangs around me are white power and motorcycle ones.

They even had a "symposium" of former gang members come up and talk to the city council or police, and these guys and gals were like "You've got empty corners.  I could set up shop here and be making a lot of money dealing."

2013-12-02 10:46:35 AM
They're not joining gangs in a sense, but are joining cliques(gang members from multiple gangs and non gang members).

Bartollas credits police and school officials for creating deterrents. The risks of being kicked out of school, arrested or killed pushed many young people away from gangs.

Yes, because those are the things that gang members fear. Why, I heard that the Bloods kick you out if you don't keep up a 2.9 GPA!

Gangs these days just don't have the cool uniforms that they used to have. Go watch The Warriors some time. Those cats have got some sweet uniforms. Then Afrika Bambaataa came along and tore down gang culture and replaced it with hip hop culture. The only serious homegrown gangs left made due with colored bandanas, and that kind of lazy styling isn't something to build a real gang out of.

These days, if you want to be in a gang, you've got to get a large, ugly tattoo that's not going to be easy to cover up, so kids who would otherwise dabble in youth violence and mayhem are a bit hesitant about joining up as it will end up keeping them from going to a good college and getting a good job at an investment bank after graduation.

Better to stick with the Bro culture, get a well-regarded tribal arm band tattoo and soak in bronzer. Because at the end of the day that shiat comes off and it is easy to make the move from gang banger to civilized society with no one the wiser.

Des Moines had plenty of activity. Lots of ties to Chicago.

2013-12-02 11:22:20 AM
I grew up in this depressing, Indiana town (that really narrows it down) which was obsessed with gangs moving in.  There was always some gang moving in from Chicago.  Never mind that you never saw a black guy within a 20 mile radius, there were always gangs on their way any day now.

When we finally got a "gang" it was a bunch of 15 year-olds from the town and they called themselves The Dude Posse.

If you consider the article says there were 2000 in Des Moines alone and then consider the size of that town you will come to the conclusion of Holy FARK!  I spent 1 night in Waterloo in the early 90s and vowed never to return.  It rivaled the worst areas of the worst cities you've been in.  The article mentions some of it but skips over another cause.  There were huge numbers of ethnic gangs.  Ethnic?  Iowa?  yes.  Huge numbers of immigrants from all over the planet coming to work in meat packing plants that had recently been de-unionized.  Caused a lot of "growing pains".

2013-12-02 11:24:43 AM
Could it also be because gangs are now about money and they don't want these little shiats screwing up the cash flow?

2013-12-02 11:25:00 AM
I used to love the gang "documentaries" on MTV back then.  There'd be 5 white kids with bandanas covering their faces talking in front of a corn field about people don't know "how rough it be in Kansas, yo."  That was a fad.

The lesser participation of gang lifestyle in inner cities?  Who knows, but I'd assume it had to do with the huge number of kids getting killed for nothing.  Just not worth it to lose brothers, best friends, and neighbors to a drug shooting followed by perpetual revenge shootings.  Neighborhood leaders and police probably got better at keeping it down, too (no citation if anyone has any reading suggestions)

The people already in gangs don't fight one-on-one. For many at-risk youths it's the alternative to getting beat up constantly.

The same reason gangs have always been around.

Not to mention, elements of gang-culture have been incorporated into government culture.

How interesting that the government studies very carefully the things it claims to fight against, then internalizes them. Ponzi schemes into Social Security, (and now, the ACA.) Gang culture into Law Enforcement. Insider-trading in Congress. The stasi and KGB into the NSA and DHS
