I guess the generic lawyer and real estate scam gigs aren't pulling the bank they used to.

Uncommon tells the tale of a bunch of high school kids who band together to discover their own God-given talents after their school loses funding for theater, music, and dance departments. The full description of the film unironically tells how the students will have to combat the bullying of the establishment to be themselves.

Multi-level irony!

Is there a happy ending?  They get their departments back and can go back to getting bullied and beaten up by their peers?

Ok, I watched the trailer, and it gave me zero idea of what the story is supposed to be about.

I don't think the filmmakers understand that a trailer is supposed to summarize the plot of the film. Alternatively, the film has no comprehensible plot to summarize.

Ok, maybe that's a little harsh. I get that its supposed to be something about students taking matters into their own hands when they lose their arts program.

But why do they lose it? There's something in there about budget cuts, and some vague reference to a court fight over religious liberty. And Eric is a magic janitor. But who is the antagonist? What drives the conflict? What even IS the conflict?

More importantly, why do I care? I guess I just love tearing apart bad filmmaking. I'll go see it!

2013-12-02 09:49:56 AM

gilgigamesh: But why do they lose it?

Because they're gay.  The establishment is the protagonist in this one.

The man needs work. He's an actor. Doesn't mean he endorses the political agenda of the group.

Then, we know what Erik Estrada is. All we're doing here is haggling over his price.

Nope. No homosexuals in those departments whatsoever

Trying to decide if this is a step up or down from his semi-legendary appearance at Wrigley Field a few years ago.

Not sure if the video still works, but the story is there.

that's just stupid.  it's not going to suck itself.

That isn't the worst trailer I've ever seen.  Anyway, shouldn't he have plenty of money left over form Chips?

Yeah, there are so many parts of that trailer that make no sense... What's special about Estrada's character that he he seems like the right guy? What's with the dudes alternately slamming each other into walls near the end? What's the point of the musical? Is it an after school 'club' type of event, do they set it up outside of school? Yeah, that trailer is a total waste of bandwidth and server space.

Not only that, according to TFA, this was made by a bunch of fundies. Why are they sticking up for the arts? My guess is the teh gays find Jebus somewhere in the film, in between all the sweaty guys slamming each other into lockers.

I kinda figured the Talibubbas would be happy to shut down all of the school's arts programs, 'cause that where all them homasexshuls hang out.

More money for football, right?

Yeah, I think it's a Jebus play of some kind, it would at least explain the courtroom scene...

Oh and the movie... who cares what an actor plays.   I have to do things at work I don't really like but it pays the bills.

Perhaps the school had to spend their arts funding on a lawsuit by the Godless evil ACLU, who is demanding the heartless removal of Creationism from science class.

It was a season-long raping of his character after Estrada demanded more money, IIRC. Not sure who caved first on that though...

I came here to look for this reference or make it myself. If you want ultra-cheesy, 70s-era Christian cinema, this movie is fantastic.
