I just don't see how our military can possibly survive with only 600 billion dollars.

It's not so much that he wants to keep wasteful spending in DoD, he and Panetta both called for Congress to stop funding shiat they don't want or need, but until there's a directive from the presidency or congress to pull our troops out from overseas, the DoD needs to support and supply them regardless. And that costs money, and while we support them, they're gonna get shot, so we develop newer and better ways to protect them. Research, development and delivery costs money.

As much as I am for pullout from overseas bases, until that happens, the reality is that the DoD can't just stop funding it's troops. You cut money from them, they will cut shiat here at home, which directly supports the troops overseas. Congress is all for cutting the defense budget, but not wasteful projects, and that's what we get fed.

"STOP SPENDING BILLIONS ON WARPLANES WE DON'T NEED" *cuts DoD budget* "WHY CAN'T WE GET ARMOR FOR OUR SOLDIERS?!" *raises DoD budget* "STOP SPENDING MONEY ON USELESS PROJECTS!!!!!" and so on...

The defense contractors will make sure the budget is increased, or that veteran benefits get cut, don't you worry.

Admittantly, I didnae read all 4 pages of the group think. But if this former Republican is for our nation's enlisted, I give him the benefit of the doubt.  But if he is only  arguing the case of the MIC (see Eisenhour, the last Real Repub Prez), he needs to be deep-sixed.

"This is an irresponsible way to govern, and it forces the department into a very bad set of choices,"

True that. The sequester is a bad thing that should have never been allowed to happen but the GOP deliberately sabotaged a deal at the 11th hour in order to now be able to play politics with the thing.

Not a huge Hagel fan by any means but the guy has a pretty thankless task ahead and I wish him luck in navigating his way through this current clusterf*ck.

Shorter Politico: Will Hagel do the bidding of namby pamby elected officials or heed the gallant call of the surveillance-military-industry complex?

I couldn't keep reading after the fear-mongering about facing potential threats and having to choose between weapons or benefits for the troops.

I'm confused.. Is Politico a right wing or left wing news source?  I don't know if I should believe anything in this or not

That's probably more to the point.

Yeah, we should've gone with Allen West.
