"The parishioner later told diocese leaders that the man "hugged" the female volunteer, causing her to catch on fire as well, Cook said. It was not apparent why."

Maybe she thought she was being hugged by Paul Walker.

The bizarre incident left many in the coastal town stunned and sent "a shock wave going through our whole diocese," said the Rev. Canon Heather E. Cook of the Episcopal Diocese of Easton, which represents the Eastern Shore.

 Just leaving that there.

Sad story, but at least the homeless guy didn't die alone like so many of them do.

This is why Bush and Cheney never followed through on their plan to round up atheists and force them to go to church.

GIS for "burning church" turns up some fascinating, and somehow beautiful images.

Every time I walk into a church the windows rattle and the holy water boils and the priests ask me to leave.

As the parishioner ran to find a fire extinguisher, he saw the church's pastor, the Rev. David Dingwall, leaving the building, and told Dingwall that the building was on fire. Dingwall then went back inside, most likely in an effort to retrieve his laptop computer from his office on the three-story rectory's upper floor, Cook said.

Cook said she was struck by the notion that Dingwall went back for the church's records. "How many of us would do the same thing?" she said.

Yes... Records...

Well, you see, when something on fire loves something flammable very much, ...

I hate when you dip your finger into the holy water that it not only burns, but turns blood red. Embarassing.

A friend of mine survived severe burns so I'm really not getting a kick out of these replies.

Seriously. I would not wish the agony she endured during her recovery on anyone. Anyone. Ever. They doped her up as much as they could and she would still start crying an hour before they came to change her dressings...

/Yes, she survived
//Yes, you would have to drop a cinder block on her foot these days to make her say "ow!"
///Really hope that poor volunteer heals soon

How dare you bring up something real these forums? Are you nuts?
We're here to hate all that shows up!

Heh.

It was years ago. All she has now is a few scars and a deeply morbid sense of humour. And a career with the red cross, helping people who've been hurt like she has. Deeply, deeply proud of her.

As an atheist I would like to point out that he was on fire before he went into the church. He did not accidentally fall into the baptismal font and burst into flames.

Subby leaves that sort of open.

I am sorry about the pastor and the church volunteer. I always say that if it weren't for little old religious women, homosexuals and Jews, the homeless would'nt get Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving dinners. Happy Christian families generally don't take the time to expose their children to the sick, the violent, and the filthy. Can't blame them, just have to acknowledge those who have the time and the courage to help while others tend to family business.

We should always remember the real silent majority of good people when being harangued by the Noisy Minority of fundamentalists and bigots of all faiths and politicial persuasions.

We just paid a late-season visit to OCMD for Veteran's Day weekend and parked on 3rd. As we left, my two-year-old pointed to St. Paul's By the Sea and said "church."

/Got nothin'. Except a vivid memory for this building.

Several years ago, I met a fireman who had been badly burned in a house fire. He was missing parts of fingers from both hands, and pretty much looked like "Fire Marshall Bill." He went through rehab, and met the qualifications to return to firefighting, which he did. Talk about getting back on the horse...

The assholes in the church could have extinguished poor guy, but noooo. Christians always want to play the victims.
