My mother and I used to visit "Miss Suzy," a woman who had lived in an iron lung since the late 40's.  She had a lively spirit and was curious to hear about things I did at school, and how my friends and I were playing.  She died in the mid-1990's.

When I had some community service as part of the National Honors Society, I chose to work at a local children's science and discovery center.  Among the exhibits was an iron lung that I learned had... housed? the woman I visited as a child.  The iron lung was larger than I remembered; it was a huge, hulking thing, in gunmetal and a drab, watery green.

In high school, there were several teachers who had suffered from polio as children and had paralyzed limbs as a result.  Both of my parents spoke of polio naps in passing conversation, and when I visited the farm, my grandparents insisted on naps in the heat of the afternoon.  (I don't know that polio naps were effective)  As a child and a young adult, I got the strong impression that polio was a dread disease, and that the polio vaccine saved us all from a scourge.

Facing the rest of a life held inside an iron lung is something I cannot fathom.  Myself, I can only imagine defeat and despair.  The spirited lives of Miss Suzy and Miss Lillard of TFA are testament to their bravery, and of the enduring nature of the human spirit.

I had the honor of meeting Ms. Odell when I was doing my initial EMT training in Jackson, TN back in 2004. She lived for decades in that iron lung, and was one of the most positive, upbeat people you'd ever meet. The ambulance that's pictured there was paid for by a federal grant thanks to her being in that county, and is now used as a CCT truck since her death. She refused to allow herself to be trach'd because she would lose the ability to talk.

The way she died was horrible. Her family tried to bag her for almost an hour according to the local media.

That EP is a downer.  I like it, but it leaves me feeling alienated, a frequent Radiohead theme, yeah, but the My Iron Lung EP is a lot of minor keys and songs without redemption for the listener.  It's also really good. :p

Sad part about the Syrian polio outbreak is that it was brought in from Pakistan, where the Taliban has outlawed the polio vaccine in the regions they control.

"Five Reasons Why I'll Never Get A Flu Shot".

Let me give you a sample, to show you how facepalmingly bad it is:

"If you're looking for a deeply scientific treatise on the flu shot, this isn't it.I'm not a chemist, a physician or someone with an advanced degree in biology.  I'm just a mom with an internet connection.  I'm a person who has researched and compiled an assortment of worrisome facts that point in one direction: the flu shot is NOT beneficial."

The absolute worst part of the article is the 127,000 people who have "liked" it. It's almost as if these people *want* to start another flu pandemic.

I think it's getting near time we ought to think about forcibly vaccinating these idiots. 'Course that'll never happen, but it should. Hopefully when Polio returns to the US (and it will), that'll be a big enough scare to shut these clowns up for good. Unfortunately it's the kids who have to pay the price, not the adults making the decision.

I am managing congestive heart failure successfully, and the last thing I need would be a case of the flu to finish me off. You bet your ass I get a flu shot the minute it's available. You have no right to inflict your case of ebola flu on the rest of us when alternatives are available.

I love that the website is called USA hitman, like a site devoted to killing Americans.  Meanwhile if you go find them on actual facebook most of their posts have like under a dozen likes each, couldn't find this particular one but I imagine its about the same.  I was looking to see if there's a way of finding out of any friends have liked a page like this, for de-friending purposes.

That's why it needs to be a crime.  If you cause or contribute to an outbreak due to ignorance or willful stupidity, manslaughter.  Just like if I decide to drive a forklift all crazy and kill somebody on accident.

Why do you care if you are immunized and have nothing to worry about? If people don't want to get immunized and risk getting the flu that is their business and not yours. You can say I told you so.

My BFF in HS's mom was a polio survivor who had additional weakness as she got older. She wasn't in an iron lung thank goodness. She used arm braces around the house. You'd forget she had any problems. I never heard her complain, and she was one of the nicest people I've ever known. She used a scooter outside the home. She told me the story of what had happened to her. She was living on a military base with her parents during the epidemic. A little boy fell outside off his bike and she helped him up. The boy was sick with polio.

She was quarantined. And she got it. The boy died. She was so grateful she didn't expose anyone, and held no ill will at all to the little boy or his family because they didn't know he was sick or anything.

I've grown up in a world where due to vaccinations, I have no reference point for this. The closest we come is with HIV, but that is not easily transmitted.

It's unfathomable that we can prevent this terrible disease and people are still suffering it. Certain vaccinations should be mandatory for public health, period. End o' subject, I don't give a rat's ass about anyone's pseudoscientific arguments.

And I say that as someone who had a reaction to the MMR vaccine. (Weird reaction, had to use steroids to stop swelling at injection point, and had muscle spasms for weeks. And you know what...vaccines are worth it). Because even if I had had a rare lethal reaction...it wouldn't/doesn't mean that vaccine is bad, or that vaccination is bad.

Growing up, I never heard of ANYONE I knew having measles. As an adult, I know of two people who's children have gotten measles, due to lack of vaccinations. One almost went blind. No child should have to suffer that when it's so preventable, just because their parents are stupid or lazy.

/pisses me off to no end

Babies. Unvaccinated people who get exposed to the viruses in question spread it around more, and babies too young to be immunized are more likely to get it. That's where most of the fatalities from recent outbreaks come from.

Because some people have kids that can't get immunized. I worked with a lady whose daughter was allergic to eggs, so a lot of vaccines were contraindicated for her. She has to rely upon herd immunity.

When selfish twats don't vaccinate their kids they actually create a real danger for her as well and there's nothing she can do to protect herself.

Vaccines don't work that way. No vaccine is 100% effective. There's always going to be a sizable population that will be susceptible to the disease whether they are vaccinated or not. Vaccination works because of "Herd Immunity", wherein the spread of a disease is dramatically slowed or halted entirely due to the fact that it cannot find a large population of susceptible hosts to infect.

Vaccines are not a magical immunity shot. That is why I, and anyone with a brain, should care.
