Do they write this bullshiat just to piss off nerds? I can't believe Constantine isn't on there either. (Swamp Thing spinoff). Agree with previous mentions as well.

/Hellblazer is great. The movie is shiat

Does Deadpool count, or was he more of a spin-in, going from a boring standalone title into the Deadpool/Cable series where he became what he is today?

I think they just mean copycats of existing characters.

He was originally a New Mutants villain. Liefeld-era, hence the pouches.

Ms. Marvel as #1? C'mon Newsarama. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who knows her outside comics fans. And even in comics she's not even that successful. Plus her past is full of shiat: Being left comatose by Rogue. Being raped by her own son. Etc. It's only now she's getting some respect (Well, probably in the Binary days, but she still wasn't much).

Also, spin-off is something that spins off the original series, so Nightwing, Deadpool, Cable, Constantine, clearly classify. As does Catwoman. Frasier was a spin-off of Cheers, because the character moved to his own series. Happy Times led to Joanie Loves Chachi and others. Angel is a spin-off of Buffy. You dun goofed, Newsarama and Ms. Marvel being #1 is veeeery suspect. I won't say you received a payment from Marvel but it's suspect.

No, to Newsarama, a spin-off of Cheers would have been a show about a bar in Quincy Massachusetts run by an aging ex-rollerderby star named Samantha Lamone who had to retire because of her eating problem.

So, this is action heroes comics only?

Because, with one spinoff character from a comics series, we got this:

I'm having trouble trying to figure out why this list exists. Why did someone sit down and write it? It only has the barest resemblance to the stated point and contains no new information or controversy. Sure, Ms. Marvel as "#1"? Weird, but okay considering that "#1" means approximately nothing.

HeartBurnKid: Wow, this is a really terrible list.

What are you talking about?  I *love* lists of gender/aged-swapped versions of other boring comic characters.

2013-11-30 10:32:54 AM
I'm digging the new Morbius solo title.  Also, Nightcrawler's initial solo run was pretty damn cool.  And yes, Venom should totally be on that list.  As ridiculous as the premise is, the new Flash Thompson Venom title is very entertaining.  Oh, and I'm loving the Rachel Cole-Alves "Lady Punisher" character from the newest Punisher run.  She should totally get her own stand-alone series.

1. Nightwing
2. Venom
3. Constantine
4. Wolverine
5. The Punisher
6. Catwoman
7. Deadpool
8. BPRD (The Hellboy spinoff, might be BRPD)
9. Power Girl (spun off from Superman IIRC)
10. Death's Head

Am I the only one who's a little bit sad that almost every character description ends with some version of, "This character has been given an entirely new origin, name and list of powers in the latest reboot?"

Maybe I'm just old and cranky, but the constant rebooting/rewriting/rejiggering has made me reluctant to get back into comics in any serious way.  I suppose we can all blame the original Crisis on Infinite Earths for this.

2013-11-30 12:48:20 PM
Not sure if it counts as a "spinoff" character, since it is very much a retconned character, but Brian Bendis' Alias had what I consider the ultimate in meta "spinoff" characters in Jessica Jones, with a fair number of the more well known spinoff characters appearing or referenced in that comic as well (and where are Power Man and Iron Fist, anyway?).

2013-11-30 01:09:33 PM

LucklessWonder: 9. Power Girl (spun off from Superman IIRC)

She was Earth 2's version of Supergirl, only she came to Earth older than the Earth 1 version, and when Superman was much older.

/and according to comic book urban legends, she also had a mischievous Wally Wood decide to keep making her rack larger and larger until someone noticed and told him to stop. After about 8 issues, they finally noticed Power Girl could feed a village.

Neither are spin-offs.

Doc Batarang: I'm having trouble trying to figure out why this list exists. Why did someone sit down and write it?

Either there was a deadline, or this was written freelance to make some money. That's why virtually all 'journalism' content is created. It's not because there was something to report; it's because reports were needed.

I agree this list is awful, but I pretty much always think these kinds of lists are awful. Seems like most people do. But we go read them. And that turns into money, so people keep writing them.

Venom's books were stupid, though, even beyond the normal '90s stupid.  And I'm not sure that Wolverine counts as a spinoff character, he was a member of an ensemble cast to begin with, not a supporting character for someone else's title.  He had spinoff books, yeah, but he was part of the main X-Men cast most of the time.  And they covered Power Girl, she's on the list (as Supergirl, but there you go, comics are weird).

So I'm afraid your list is only 3000 times better than TFA's, rather than the full 9000 possible.  Sorry.

Hellblazer is one of the best comics ever published. There was no movie. It didn't happen. I spit on Keanu Reeves.

Wolverine started as a Hulk villain.
