Rusty Shackleford: They were probably worried that she was going to run for Congress.

Nah, run-of-the-mill depression doesn't qualify you for that.  To run for Congress, you have to completely batshiat.

She should be depressed. She paid 6 grand for a cruise...

That is pretty freaking weird. It's okay though because the CIA/FBI/NSA only snoops on foreigners like Canadians, not regular 'Mericans.

According to another article she bought travel insurance but the fine print included an exclusion for being denied boarding. So she doesn't have that going for her, which isn't nice.

CBC isn't exactly the Daily Fail. Also if you read the article there are some super pissed high ranking officials being quoted. Not exactly something that happens with some phony fabricated fluff piece. At least not in Canada.

...Another question is, having this information, do the superiors of these border agents agree with the decision? Do the superiors of these border agents agree with the use of medical information, however acquired? I disagree on the acquisition of such information, through any means, disagree with the use of such information, and disagree with her being hospitalized for depression (over a year prior) represents a danger to herself or others. Numerous issues.

Wow. I read that fine on the first go.

We both need to go to the hospital. Hope you never need to go to Canada...you ain't comin back in to the U S of A.

Never mind. No hospital. I live on the jacked-up side of Windsor. I like that you can drink in Windsor's strip clubs. Don't take this away from me.

There's very few in MI that you can drink in.

The ONE I know you can drink in... You don't wanna... The "dancers" look sticky and I'm pretty sure it's not a legit operation.

I also thought drinking in strip clubs was normal.

What's next, places where the girls keep their panties on and wear pasties?

I find it bizarre that most Canadians think they have some sort of right to enter the United States. Especially white Canadians. I think most of us believe because we share a border and a common language, somehow we're given an unconditional go pass to enter that country. It's stupid. Why would we? The US isn't Canada, anymore than Canada is the US.

I apologize to American farkers for morons like this idiot woman.

OK, I'll be the one to sacrifice herself and bite.

She wasn't traveling TO the United States.  She was traveling THROUGH the United States to get to her cruise ship.  That is called an "in transit" passenger.

Also, why is she a "moron"?  She's probably traveled to the United States before with no issues.  Or, she sees thousands lined up at Pearson every day gaining access to the United States.  Also, under various treaties, she DOES have a right to enter the United States as long as she bears the appropriate documentation.

The serious issue here is how did USCBP in a pre-clearance station get medical background of a non-American citizen?  And the second issue is, why does being depressed in the past make any difference?  Those are the questions that need to be answered, not why some "moron" thought she was prepared and eligible to enter the United States.

OgreMagi: This kind of shiat should result in the immediate firing of the people involved, because HIPAA.

She's a Canadian, so HIPAA offers her no protection.

Canada has a similar law, but since it was the Americans who refused her entry, it also doesn't help her.

Certainly somebody illegally accessed confidential medical files, but unless they identify themselves nobody's going to get in trouble.

And Canadian officialdom can complain to the US about illegal accessing of confidential Canadian data, but it's not like they can make the US take any action. Or that they'll even bother complaining.

Maybe in 5 years the Privacy Commissioner will write a report about it. I predict the last two words of this report will be either "tsk tsk" or "oh well".

That's why, when I travel, I don't stop over or transfer in the US. It's Toronto direct flights only.
