We got a good laugh about all the hate mail the Catholic Diocese got when the paper ran a story about them switching to the ACA for spouses and children (relative of my SO was involved in the decision).

Sure, the diocese saved a ton of money and families got better insurance cheaper, but Tea Partiers (who weren't even catholic) would have NONE OF THAT!

That was the extent of "political" discussion. Pointing and laughing...

I was with my father and his wife.

Myself, and the more liberal people there, know better than to bring up politics.

Instead, we had a pleasant conversation the how-tos and dynamics of owning your own hot air balloon.

What kind of idiot brings up Obamacare with their racist Fark Independent uncle at Thanksgiving.

We had a benghazi shortly after lunch but other than that it was relatively tard free

The ACA is here to stay, biatches.  Done and done.  Suck it.

Get over your failure to stop it and move on to new ways to screw people over.

Typically, it's the racist Fark Independent uncle who brings it up.  One of the symptoms of ODS is an inability to refrain from sharing one's infromed opinion with others.

Those tweets seemed like they were from right wing treats that started the ocare conversations over thanksgiving to be dicks then blame liberals. I know Fox has been droning on and on about some cheap to do with taking points you can use for just such an occasion. I didn't hear about it from ant other source.

Meh, I started making my first beer ever. The yeast seem to be happy with my efforts this morning.

I forgot to check in with Twitchy before the big meal, and, therefore, had no idea what I was supposed to be outraged about.

So we talked about the Lions instead. Apparently Detroit has a professional football team; who knew?

Wednesday evening, my brother in law signed up for insurance through the Obamacare website.  He got better coverage that he could never afford before.

The timing of that was awesome to preempt any political Obamacare talk over thanksgiving.  Instead, we talked about football, which was very nice.

We had to pick up our granny from the nursing home yesterday. It took 3 hours to get her checked out. My mother in law would not stop complaining about it and how it was Obama's fault for farking up health care.

Not the ACA's fault. Not Obamacare's fault (she thinks they're different things). But Obama personally changed the law just to make it more difficult to check someone out of a nursing home for the day. Despite the fact that they had to make sure she was physically healed enough (just had hip surgery last week and she was relearning how to walk) to go home, and they were understaffed on Thanksgiving day.

My uncle-in-law had his own stories about how Obama personally fired him from his job as a cop in New York. Not the sequester's fault, not budget cuts, but Obama personally decided that he would lose his job on some no name district in upstate New York.

/My in laws are a bit delusional.
//And racist.

2013-11-29 02:30:45 PM
Erm, it seems to me the only ones really bringing up the ACA are conservateahabertarians. The talking point is still "Repeal!" while everyone else wants a jobs bill, a farm bill, a NDA bill, an immigration bill and some judicial appointments.

Three hours is a ridiculously long time to check someone out of a nursing home. What the fark, Obama?

Who talks about politics during Thanksgiving dinner? My family talked about what we were all up to, then we drank a little, then we started the Feats of Strength.

We mainly talked about food and alcohol.

My family discussed politics, as well as sports, movies, religion, music, work, relationships, etc.

I guess it's a bad idea if the only way you know how to talk about politics is by screaming at your family for not agreeing with you 100% on everything. If you have a family who enjoys civilized discussions it's not a boorish thing to do at all.

I couldn't avoid politics at Thanksgiving. My conservative dad and uncle kept bringing up muslims beheading people while the rest of us were trying to eat. It farking sucked.

2013-11-29 02:41:50 PM
My father's side of the family is universally liberal. I am arguably the most "conservative" member at any gathering, if only because I am registered as an independent (not to be confused with a Fark Independent™) and because I own some firearms.

Such discussions do not occur during meetings.

Your dad and uncle are the same person? You have bigger problems than his politics.

Got through a fine dinner out with the inlaws and the derpy boyfriend of the sister-in-law. Just avoided politics entirely. If he got on the topic somehow, just changed the subject or ignored it and moved on.

If people just don't argue like it's a forum or facebook you all get along fine. We're there to stuff our faces and get drunk.

I spent Thanksgiving with some of the normal relatives, but also with some relatives of relatives that I hadn't seen in person in more than 20 years.  And met their wives and children for the first time.

Nothing unpleasant was discussed.

2013-11-29 02:53:20 PM
We watched football games (go Ravens!) and wondered how anyone could jump in their car and go to the mall after such a great feast.

2013-11-29 02:54:32 PM
I was surprised that Obamacare didn't come up in conversation yesterday. My uncles actually talked about China and international policy more than domestic politics.

Also my mom brought up Benghazi. She's actually a big fan of Obama. She voted for him twice. But she really likes Lara Logan and didn't understand why CBS put her on suspension. She didn't seem to realize the depths of just how discredited that Benghazi special was.

"News people lie all the time. I don't understand why she got in so much trouble for doing what everyone does," she said.

"Because 60 Minutes is supposed to be better than that."

That's pretty much where controversial political topics ended. I was pleased.

Did they force you to bow your heads and give thanks to god for creating Glenn Beck before anyone could eat?

This is one of those things conservatives assume liberals do, right? Like talk about Bush's turkey?

2013-11-29 03:05:03 PM
It didn't come up. My mother has really put her foot down on keeping family gatherings politics free ever since the argument earlier this year when my father insisted that gay marriage should never be allowed because of what it says in the bible. "End of story!" We just so happened to be having a crawfish boil at the time. I took great delight in telling him what the bible says about eating shellfish.

If it had come up, I would have asked why they were so quick to call ACA a failure because of a buggy website yet they still defend the Iraq War which cost over $750 billion dollars, thousand of lives of the US Armed Forces, over a hundred thousand lives of innocent civilians, Abu Ghriab, Blackwater and so forth all based on a lie about WMDs so that Junior can impress Daddy and Cheney could improve his Halliburton stock?

The morning of Thanksgiving, my parents were watching Fox and Friends.  That has to be the most depressing morning show ever.

Fortunately, my families Racist Democrat, yes he is a hardcore Democrat unless we are discussing Obama then he gets his hate on, wasn't there. He is my wife's uncle.

My Thanksgiving was harmless. Just talks of online courses my dad does in his free time. Definitely beats the time overhearing how Nelson Mandela is an evil person and trying to convince people that Al Gore and Michael Moore aren't Jewish.

Long story short, a couple years ago my dad explained that Nelson Mandela just encouraged laziness and violence in blacks when he didn't do anything concerning the high poverty and crime in South Africa despite the end of apartheid.

The other part was from a friend's uncle from a dinner six years ago who ranted how politics have been derailed by "Jews like Al Gore and Michael Moore". When confronted on how they weren't Jewish he argued "But they look it and act it!"

2013-11-29 03:31:18 PM
I stayed on the other side of the house while my Libertarian brother and Fox News-watching father-in-law talked about the evils of Obamacare, but I did get drawn into a discussion about "No, you shouldn't be afraid of black people because they aren't all going to try and play the Knockout game with your lily-white face."
