Indeed. It's not a hard concept: it's only electrocution if the person dies.

Just think "drowned" but for electric shocks.

yeah well that's how society works. you pay taxes for what you need. a 1 cent splost in the city would have probably taken care of it.

GBB: God forbid the townspeople pay any farking taxes to cover their public services.  Must be a red town/county/state.

When I lived in Denver, I didn't like paying taxes to fund the police, mostly because they ignored actual criminals and gangs roaming around downtown and 16th street, but beat the crap out of random people for no particular reason. I was also pretty ticked that when my house got robbed, there was a speed trap with 5 squad cars less than a block away... yet it took more than 6 hours to get someone to my house, where he took a terse report and bluntly told me that it was unlikely I'd get any of my stuff back, as they weren't going to investigate at all Here in Grand County, I'm ok with paying higher taxes... because the Police and Fire departments regularly are on SAR missions, helping people, finding lost hunters, helping people get to hospitals in bad weather, and doing actual civil service.

Sometimes there's more to the argument than just "I hate taxes" or whatever derp you assign to people who don't necessarily want to fund some emergency services.

These threads always amaze me at how many people have not even the slightest comprehension of how things work outside of their 100,000+ person cities.  I especially like the whole theme of 'omg... donations?! Stupid bootstrappy bastards. These things are best handled with TAXES!! Need stuff? More taxes!'

Ignorant people are ignorant.

I think the issue is this is such a significant sum for the town to pay in one setting, taxes would need a temporary but large hike and would take longer to occur, not only to pass but then to collect and distribute and spend, whereas this places money direct into the coffers of the department while raising awareness.

/Rural life is a lot different.

It certainly is. The town I grew up in had one police officer.  He had to live there too.

Different times, I guess.

CSB: I grew up in the 50s. My grandpa told me to drive him home when I was 10yo, barely able to push the pedals. He came over to get me for some chores he wanted me to do. When we walked to his 1949 F-1 Ford pickup, with a 3-speed floor shifter, he got in the passenger side and told me to get in. He explained the basics, and I hopped that puppy half a block to the stop sign. The local grocery was on this corner and a cop was sitting in the parking lot. Gramps waved at him and said, "Take it a little easier on the clutch". I got it going, but Gramps wouldn't let me shift, so we ground it out in first gear for three blocks. The cop followed us the whole way. I pulled into the the driveway and the cop stopped behind the truck. I had visions of (as 10yos will) of going to jail for the REST OF MY LIFE. Gramps got out and was talking to the cop when I walked up. The cop told me to keep practicing; that wasn't bad for my first time and it'll get easier when I get a little height. He then drove off and we got back to work :End CSB

/Different times, indeed

They were different times back then. Sometimes, I forget that times now, aren't the same as they were. It doesn't mean we have to let go of them, we just have to adjust to them. Also doesn't mean, that it's different either. If you're an asshole now, probably means you were then too.(that's not being directed at you, I'm just saying it).

I forget this as much as anyone, yet the fact remains. Asshole now, would've still been an asshole then. People aren't different, times are.

Rural often equals poor. Like... destitute poor. We tend to think of poor people as being homeless bums in the city, but if you want to see some real, soul-crushing poverty, hit the sticks. People aren't living out there in dilapidated trailers made of arsenic for fun. A lot of rural areas can't even afford one officer and instead rely on staties to provide local coverage.

Yeah, exactly. There should be a class in junior high (6-9 grade) in practical matters. Call it life class. Teach the ideal, how you should be dealin', how you interview, traffic laws, birds and bees, how to budget, how to treat a cold, the basics of running a business, and a thousand other things that parents are dropping the ball on. At least the kids would know what they should be doing, and what their parents ain't tellin' 'em. Beyond that, they also know they know what they shouldn't be doing...and why.
