Micheal Jordan is not notable outside of basketball.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson is notable outside of basketball as a savvy businessman.

On the court Jordan is the most overrated player of all time.  If I were to pick any player from any time to begin a team I wouldnt start with Jordan.

/also Jordan is nowhere near as liked among peers as Magic

Lol.  You think Jordan is overrated?  Stupid kids these days commenting on players they never saw play.  I watched him score 60 for the Bulls on the same day that he got four touchdowns for the Bears.  I watched him set the long jump world record on one of his dunks.  Then they measured the dude's heart after his death and it was twice as large as any of the competitors.  Or maybe it was Secretariat, but what's important is that Jordan was the best player of all-time and you are a n00b.  Lol.  You're just mad that Jordan bet on the Bulls and made a lot of money when he beat your team.  Lol.

In 2009, AP's Nancy Benac noted that the president's grandfather, Stanley Dunham, was in a supply and maintenance company, not in combat. That's noble work, but "fought in Patton's army" implies something else.

ANYONE who served under Patton in WWII "fought" in Patton's army. The drives he pushed his men on are legendary. That means the support people had to keep up and work under intense pressure/fire. My grandfather was a tank-commander in III Corps under Patton. Some people shot, some people kept the sh*t running. Also, remember that cooks and support personnel helped the 101st hold Bastogne. Hence the term, "every soldier a rifleman."

And they quote the "nobody" and think people will actually believe he meant that Jordon was a "nobody"?

Another fine example of "journalism" from the Pedophile Post.

Explain how he is overrated.

Don't say "Well, no one liked him, he was a dick teammate"

He was.  He'd be the first to admit it.  But you don't have to be liked by your peers to be a great player.  Who gives a shiat if the opposing center doesn't like you?  Who cares if their 2nd string point guard thinks you are a jerk.

Also, why would MJ care if he wasn't recognized outside of basketball?  He made his money in basketball, why should he go do something he isn't familiar with?  That is like saying "Tiger Woods isn't recognized outside of golf".

Jordan is the most overrated basketball player of all time. He cheated on his wife and was bad at baseball. He never hosted a tv show and didn't own his own theater chain. His peers never invited him over for Thanksgiving and did I mention he was bald? If I could pick any player in history to start a team around, I would only pick him second, not first. And that is why Michael Jackson is the worst basketball player in history.

At NBA legend Magic Johnson's house, Obama said he talked with David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, who's traveling with the president. Obama said Remnick, who was a sports reporter earlier in his career, asked him, "So, what about Magic? What does this mean to you?"
Obama seemed to completely dismiss Michael Jordan and his "hometown" Chicago Bulls by saying there's "nobody" who is a "bigger icon" than Magic:
"You watch this career unfold, and it's a magical career," Obama said. "For anybody who loves basketball as much as me, there's nobody who is a bigger icon than Magic Johnson."
More than his career on the court, Obama said he admires how Johnson handled his HIV diagnosis with grace and how he leveraged his fame and fortune to build institutions.
"It's for those two reasons that I'm proud to call Magic Johnson a friend," Obama said.

Statistically speaking, that's not true.  If you look at the NBA records for almost any category there are three names that are repeatedly at the top: Dr. Shaquille O'Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, and Michael Jordan.  It could argued that he's not the greatest player of all time, but he's certainly among the greats and in no way overrated.

Now, if you want to say he was the most over-hyped player of all time, that could be true and is considerably more difficult to substantiate.

Don't know why people are gettin butthurt about your comment. I mean, honestly, other than being one of the all time greatest basketball players, what has MJ done? Hawked underwear, owned a mediocre NBA team, and sponsored an ATV team most people have beer heard of? Magic has been one of the leading activists for HIV/AIDS, has helped hundreds if not thousands of impoverished inner city school kids go to college, and is considered one of the most successful African American businessmen in this country. I grew up watching Jordan dominate the NBA in the 90's, and he's one of my favorite players, but what Frederick said is true, that's all most people know him for. Well that and Space Jam.

MBK, what, other than golf and cheating on his wife is Tiger Woods known for? Letting EA put his name on a golfing video game? Saying Tiger is a great golfer but that's all he's really known for isn't an insult, it's just the way it is. Unless he's done something great for the world that I'm not aware of. Same with MJ, just because basketball's all he's recognized for doesn't have to be an insult.

I'll say it again, just to be clear, Jordan is known for being a great basketball player, and Tiger is known for being a great golfer. In fact, they are hands down pretty much the best in their respective sports, but that's it. Magic Johnson, on the other hand has achieved fame and success on and off the court.

And Snapper Carr, I'm not saying LeBron is better than MJ, but to say that Jordan was a better defender is a little overboard. Compare their stats solely regarding defense and it's clear LeBron comes out ahead. Again, I'm gonna repeat myself, because I know people are about to start putting words in my mouth. LeBron is not a better basketball player than Jordan, but his stats show that he is better at defense.

/Waiting for people to say I'm somehow insulting MJ and Tiger Woods just because acknowledge that they're only well known for playing their respective sports
//Or because I recognize that someone could be better at one single aspect of the game than MJ

If Magic Johnson wasn't HIV+, he wouldn't have had to find money elsewhere. If it wasn't for that, he might have been considered just a really great basketball player. I remember the early 90's when people were saying that he shouldn't play for the NBA any longer since he could 'infect' his team and that he would 'probably just get sick and die before his contract was up'. Of course he didn't, but I remember the stigma against him when I was a little girl. People saying he was gay, or did drugs or whatever.

I think the same would be said for Michael Jordan if he had to stop playing basketball during the height of his career. Some of these guys are just headstrong and stubborn and want to win at whatever they do. Michael Jordan might have made some blunders, but as far as I know Air Jordans are still extremely hot commodities and 'vintage' Air Jordans fetch a high price. I don't remember seeing any stories about people shooting each other over tickets to see a movie at a Magic Johnson Theatre. Not that murdering other people should be a qualifier for how popular something is.

With Magic Johnson having to retire, he was able to branch out and put that energy elsewhere and he did a lot of good as a result. But if things were different and he weren't HIV... I have no doubt none of that would materialize and he'd just stick with the NBA before retiring.

But as far as the best NBA player of all time? Neither Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan.

I have zero stake in this conversation, but to be fair, Michael Jordan is simply the face of Air Jordan's.  It's not his business or his marketing idea.  Magic, on the other hand, is actually a successful business man, not simply a commercial for an already existing brand.

That's not true at all. Before Jordan, and before he got HIV, Magic was considered the greatest players of all time. Still is. It can totally be argued that Magic, at the height I his career, was the better player, it's mostly just a matter of opinion.

He is generally considered "the best".  So there is his "rating".  But he is not the all-time scorer, or rebounder, or blocked shot leader, or assist leader.  What was he "best" at?  His rating isnt really backed up by individual stats.  Is it a composite rating?  Personally I'd say kareem abdul jabbaar is the best all-time, and I'd point to his scoring title.  It is a legitimate case.

Dude, he saved the Looney Tunes from slavery, you should cut him some slack.

Yeah, and once again his peers got no credit -Barkley, Ewing, Bogues, Grandmama; even that tall white dude.  Plus the tunes would have been defeated without Bill Murray.

Also if the conversation is purely NBA icon then the answer is Jerry West.  Literally the NBA's icon.
