By 5:45 p.m., officials said the brother had been arrested and would be booked into San Diego jail on felony charges.

Hello prison, I have these awesome jokes I just learned.
They cant lock him up for long enough.

Police dogs were used to inspect the car. Lt. Ruano said the dogs acted in a manner that indicated there might be a bomb in the vehicle. Eventually, bomb investigators determined there was no bomb in the car.

Are these the same dogs that determine that there might be drugs in the car?

Seriously, if a given test yields only '{return(true);}' each time, then what is the point of ever performing the test? As Lewis Black says, 'Then you might as well just take a stick and go "ooga booga ooga booga".'

so unless something is 100% full proof, 100% of the time, it's the same as being worthless?

Dr: "we think you might have cancer."

You don't seem to appreciate the serious business of causing a traffic jam in California.  Bomb threat?  Some time served as a little wrist slap.  Three hour traffic jam?  Throw away the key.

It's the current trend. See also the recent Obamacare website rollout: It didn't work 100% perfectly on the very first day? It's worthless, scrap the whole thing, let's go back to the old way because this can't possibly ever work.

I just hope we switch to cleaner and more sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels before we start experience uprisings against the over-regulated and over-cautious societies we live in. Otherwise, it will be a mess and the subsequent rebuilding effort becomes iffy if we can't get fuel or heating.

Being a contrarian, I was getting all set to mock the sister for taking such a ridiculous prank seriously. But then the article mentions "Miramar Way", i.e. near Miramar Naval Air Station. The article doesn't say what the sister does, but if we find out later that it's a military job, where you have to take anything remotely like this at face value, then the brother needs to be raked over the coals for being twice as much of an asshat.

Bomb jokes are pretty much in the same category as yelling fire in a crowded theater.

1. It is something you just shouldn't do.
2. You cause panic and people fearing for their life.
3. It was never close to being a funny joke in the first place.

Why would you even believe that? Does she think she's important enough that someone would actually want to blow her up?

...so Sylvia Browne was an effective medium, she just had a really bad day when she led a woman to commit suicide by falsely telling her that her daughter was dead?

/Yes, reliability matters.
//Bomb- and drug-sniffing dogs are about as reliable as polygraph tests...and should be about as admissible in court.

Since when are bomb- or drug-sniffing dogs admissible in court? They are not: the drugs they find, however, are.

IIRC a hit by a drug/bomb dog gives the cops probable cause to do a search.

At least she picked the worst place to pull over. According to the article it is right along the flight path of the Marine air station.

I don't know about locking him up.  Do you give jail time for pulling one of the biggest d*ck moves ever?  A fine that will take him 10 years to pay off yes, but jail time no.

I'm not saying to toss everything out everywhere; I'm saying reliance on a test should be proportional to its reliability. If a drug sniffing dog, for example, alerts to every vehicle, then it's not a very good test, and even if that may be what the police unit wants in the case of drugs, carrying that same way of thinking over to other fields such as explosives testing can lead to problems such as bomb scares.

When the deepwater horizon rig went under, they were asked why no one reacted to the general alarm, and they were told that the thing went off, on average, once per hour, 24 hours a day, and had been for years. Everyone had learned to ignore it.

I'm glad we saw the clog far enough ahead to bail out onto Kearny VIlla Road on the way to my aunt's house.  I thought for sure some big rig had jackknifed over the carpool lanes or something, there were cops diverting traffic at the 52.

We were lucky, we got there in time for the crab dip.

...which is just as good as making the dogs admissible in court. If you base "probable cause" on something that is inadmissible, anything found during that "probable cause" should be inadmissible, because it was an unreasonable search, no matter what the cops say.

hey, let's lighten up on this guy.  it was just a silly prank.  let's pitch in and get him some gifts:

perhaps a few bars of soap?

and instead of wrapping the soap, we can just drop it into his new sock!
