Neither, if you're the type of person that needs a mainstream journalist to tell you what console to get then wait until there is a price drop and more content on either system. If video games aren't something you follow and spend a good number of hours a week enjoying don't buy either one right now. Maybe get a WiiU  or 3DS

I am hoping for 8 bit style games with current generation graphics, like I want a Mega Man side scrolling game not with 8 bit but instead make it look as graphically amazing as Killzone: Shadow Fall. (or a scrolling shooter like R-Type with modern graphics) I also hope that the new arcade cabinets they design with PS4 or X-Box One hardware (since they did that with the PS3 hardware) will make the games look great, though I also hope they make them fun too.

This.

I'll be getting my wife a Wii U for Christmas. Both for the new mario games, and legacy. I can't believe I'll be playing SMB3 on a bigscreen TV in less than a month.
And then later in 2014 I'll get myself an X1. I will enjoy both, while still enjoying my 360. Geez I still fire up my first gen PSP once in a blue moon for some fun.

I do not recommend the Wii U.  It seems to be a repeat of the GameCube but with a worse library.

The 3DS is an awesome system though especially for JRPGs.

FTFA PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One: Which is best for gamers?

What's best for this lifelong console gamer is switching to PC gaming. Steam, GoG, Origin, [redacted], etc.

Just out of curiosity what do either the Xbone or PS4 do that a PC can't? As far as I can tell the only advantage to consoles is that they are easier to set up out of the box and exclusive titles.

The Games. The exclusive titles alone are worth the relatively low cost of consoles. If you're a big PC gamer wait until now and pick up a cheap PS3/XB360 and play through all the exclusives you missed over the past 7/8 years.

Red Dead Redemption is an amazing game if you haven't played it I'd say pick up a PS3 or XB360 for that alone.
Last of Us is up there for game of the generation for me. Demon's Souls is amazing and made me realize how a challenging game can be fair and fun. Uncharted, especially 2, is pretty awesome and really fun to play. Other titles that are great and not available on PC: Journey, Flower, Valkyria Chronicles, Tales of ____, Lost Odyssey and a bunch more depending on what genre game you like.

Standardized hardware is a big factor.   You don't need to worry whether or not a certain game is going to run on your system.

If all you want is a golf game neither the PS4 or XBO are a good choice  right now since neither has a good golf game at this point (xbox has Powerstar golf but it plays like a cheap Hot Shots Golf knock off)

The new Tiger Woods golf game usually doesn't ship until March, but with EA and Tiger ending their partnership who knows if that will delay or speed things up. EA announced they aren't going to support WiiU so that is probably a bad choice as well.

best bet is pick up a cheap XB360 or PS3 (some places are doing them for $100-150 tomorrow) and PGA Tour 14 (should be $30) and that will hold you over until spring. If you really want a next gen console and don't want to wait for a good golf game decide how important motion control is to you. If you like it get the Xbox if not get the PS4.

Agreed, a wider selection of titles is an advantage, but I'll probably wait until the prices drop a bit down the road. I'm currently running three platforms: PC / XBox360 / PS3,  but I find myself using the consoles less and less (Last of Us being an exception).

I get that, but I game a lot and have run into two problems: Fallout 3 and Bioshock. Both games were written in the XP era being run on Win7 and the fixes were easy. As a bonus when I go through the process I learn something, so I see it as a good thing (others might disagree).

I had a friend that had a kid that was into gaming.  Like 11 or 12 or something.  He was over at the house and I had Portal 2 up on my rig and decided to let him play while everybody else hung out.  He only got about an hour in when everybody left.  Next time he was over I told him his savegame was still on the box if he wanted to pick up where he left off.  He said, "Nah, I watched a play through on Youtube... PC.  That covers every console up to ps2/gamecube, because emulators.  On top of that are the PC exclusive things like steam.

I don't usually pick up consoles until about halfway into that generation.  By then, the price has dropped and they've fixed most of the problems like overheating, RROD and such.

a lot of the PlayStation library can be legally emulated with retail discs + pcsx /w BIOS emulation. Unless the game is metal gear then you just get a grey screen. :(
