I have to give Officer Obie (Obanheim) a lot of credit for playing himself in the film. As I recall from reading something a few years ago, he said something to the effect of "I'd rather make myself look stupid than have someone else do it".

Saw Arlo in concert a few years ago. It was interesting how he managed to rework the song to leave out the no longer acceptable gay slur.

Captain James T. Smirk: As I recall from reading something a few years ago, he said something to the effect of "I'd rather make myself look stupid than have someone else do it".

He remained on the local police force for decades. People who met him while passing through said he was good humored about the whole thing and a polite gentleman.

Guthrie has also become a Rand Paul Republican.  Like a lot of those 60s "hippie" types it appears that he wasn't motivated so much by righteous indignation against and unfair and immoral society as he was interested in smoking dope and sleeping with groupies.....and not getting shot in a jungle in Southeast Asia.

BTW, there is an old dude who lives down the street who is rabid Tea-Party supporter.  Back in the 60s he was a hippie who lived in Greenwich Village.  He used his wealthy parents' money to attend a foreign medal school in Franco controlled Spain.  He came back after the draft ended.  He never did become a doctor.

Alice's Restaurant came up in the course of discussion once upon a time, and an older fellow and I spontaneously starting singing a couple bars of it, in harmony.  Weirded the hell out of this AFROTC cadet in the room with us.

Because I was another AFROTC cadet.

And the older fellow was the USAF Colonel larger than life fighter pilot that was in charge of our training.

They still took both of us.  Things had changed, Arlo, things had changed... 18 years ago.

Yeah, seems to be pretty common. I know a few boomers who actually admit it though it's usually because they're bragging about how many women they had sex with at protests where they didn't really care about the cause, just about getting "ass and grass".

blackhonda: He (Arlo) is currently worth 10 million plus. There gold in protest I guess!

Wonder how much of that is from record sales and how much is from performances. Arlo seems to be perpetually on tour. Singing the same song night after night for decades must be as mind numbing as working in a cubicle for decades on one TPS report after another... but with significantly better pay.

ski9600: I like the film version also.

Most people hate it but I thought the film was ok. It was nice to see the whole situation more in depth and the ending gave the more realistic message that life often sucks and people are often imperfect self centered jerks. And it captured the general sense of how annoying and self righteous hippies could be.

The film made no damned sense. It was a long, meandering tale that ultimately went nowhere. The whole point was to get to the dump incident, which really isn't that great of a story element in the first place.

It was a long, boring movie. One of those "you had to be there" sort of films. I wasn't there, so to me, it was like reading 10-year-old issues of Prevention in a doctor's office.

Why do police guys beat on peace guys?"

Amazing how traditions evolve, isn't it? Thanksgiving used to be about hypermaxing your caloric intake, followed by falling asleep in front of the TV watching insipid football. Now, we eat a hearty meal, listen to "Alice's Restaurant", and watch a 22 minute episode of a long-defunct sitcom about a radio station dropping live turkeys from a helicopter.

The hippies/boomers that DID buy into it traded in their idealism for materialism decades ago.  It's pretty much what the 80s were all about.

And no, I'm not going to kill myself. Looking to retire soon.
