Fissile: Guthrie has also become a Rand Paul Republican. Like a lot of those 60s "hippie" types it appears that he wasn't motivated so much by righteous indignation against and unfair and immoral society as he was interested in smoking dope and sleeping with groupies.....and not getting shot in a jungle in Southeast Asia.

Yeah, seems to be pretty common. I know a few boomers who actually admit it though it's usually because they're bragging about how many women they had sex with at protests where they didn't really care about the cause, just about getting "ass and grass".

blackhonda: He (Arlo) is currently worth 10 million plus. There gold in protest I guess!

Wonder how much of that is from record sales and how much is from performances. Arlo seems to be perpetually on tour. Singing the same song night after night for decades must be as mind numbing as working in a cubicle for decades on one TPS report after another... but with significantly better pay.

ski9600: I like the film version also.

Most people hate it but I thought the film was ok. It was nice to see the whole situation more in depth and the ending gave the more realistic message that life often sucks and people are often imperfect self centered jerks. And it captured the general sense of how annoying and self righteous hippies could be.

Listener-supported WYEP in Pittsburgh played it around noon. Radio tradition.

"I'm sittin' here on the bench, I mean I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough join the Army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after bein' a litterbug."

Since I'm going to bring my wife a traditional Thanksgiving lunch at work (toast, popcorn, jellybeans and pretzel sticks) we'll drive to the dump after dinner and see if it's closed.

The film made no damned sense. It was a long, meandering tale that ultimately went nowhere. The whole point was to get to the dump incident, which really isn't that great of a story element in the first place.

It was a long, boring movie. One of those "you had to be there" sort of films. I wasn't there, so to me, it was like reading 10-year-old issues of Prevention in a doctor's office.

Ummm, I think littering should be a capital crime. And dumping garbage is super bad so they should dig you up and then kill you again.

The war never ends, they just find a different enemy that we're all supposed to hate.  We have always been at war with Eastasia.

Arlo really, really hated the people who weren't able to dodge the draft.

FriarReb98: One of these days, I am going to have to make a drive out to the quote-scene-of-the-crime-unquote.  I'll be sure not to bring any shovels, rakes, or implements of destruction.  Don't want to run into Chief Officer Obie Jr. or nothin'.

Is it marked?  Finding one of those highway historic placards with the words "scene of the crime" in quotes would be hilarious.

Never forget the lessons that history teaches or you will make the same goddamned stupid mistakes again and again and again. Please do not become a slow learner.

So now that Thanksgiving is (almost) over and we're gearing up for Christmas, is it time to start with "The Pause of Mr. Clause"?

"You must think Santa Claus Weird
He has long hair and a beard
Giving his presents for free...
Why do police guys beat on peace guys?"

Amazing how traditions evolve, isn't it? Thanksgiving used to be about hypermaxing your caloric intake, followed by falling asleep in front of the TV watching insipid football. Now, we eat a hearty meal, listen to "Alice's Restaurant", and watch a 22 minute episode of a long-defunct sitcom about a radio station dropping live turkeys from a helicopter.

/Still funny after all these years

Guthrie has also become a Rand Paul Republican.  Like a lot of those 60s "hippie" types it appears that he wasn't motivated so much by righteous indignation against and unfair and immoral society as he was interested in smoking dope and sleeping with groupies.....and not getting shot in a jungle in Southeast Asia.

BTW, there is an old dude who lives down the street who is rabid Tea-Party supporter.  Back in the 60s he was a hippie who lived in Greenwich Village.  He used his wealthy parents' money to attend a foreign medal school in Franco controlled Spain.  He came back after the draft ended.  He never did become a doctor.

The hippies/boomers that DID buy into it traded in their idealism for materialism decades ago.  It's pretty much what the 80s were all about.

Got a ticket a few years ago for illegal dumping.  Couldn't believe the cop dug through the bags of hot garbage in summer sun to find out who to bug, but he was pretty nice about it.

I've never understood the appeal people have for this rambling hot mess of a song.
I've never smoked dope either.

1975 actually is when Saigon fell. You fail at history.

In 73 I had to sign up for the draft. The war was still going. Missed the next two draft picks but not by much.

And no, I'm not going to kill myself. Looking to retire soon.
