There's an easy solution, subby. Stop being poor.

"For just fifty dollars a day you can help little Tad and little Muffy here get the Dom Perignon they so desperately need to match up with their condor-egg omelets. For just one hundred dollars a day -- less than renting a domestic SUV while in Aspen -- you can make sure Tad and Muffy don't have to hangar their G5 outdoors. How can you look at these faces and say 'Fly Commercial?'"

Jeez subby, it's not like you are being forced to pay for it in the form of taxes or anything.

Meh.  Nothing compares to the sound of a Gnome Monosoupape.

I mean, it's just engineering *MADNESS* to bolt the propeller to the crankcase and spin the entire engine around a stationary crankshaft.

Institute NASCAR like rules so the guy everyone likes wins instead of the guy who comes in first. "Aw Gary Glider won the race but was found with under inflated landing gear. That means Studly Allsmiles who came in tenth won!"

Get a few other racing locations, copyright and patent everything and the rest is product tie in. If you have to, lure the rednecks in with a few plane crashes. "Ah was a race plane feller long before Skids Ferwhig crashed. Yew guys are jus' jumping on the bandwagon!"

When you've sold your first window decal of Skids Ferwhig's smiling deceased face to an SUV owner, you will never again know poverty.

And yet, when subby's NFL or MLB team needs to build a Xanadu to allow their local millionaires to play visiting millionaires from other cities and they turn to the city expecting city officials to further pauperize the residemts, subby is probably all "Oh hell yeah!"

Oh, shut your cockhole, submitter.

If it keeps a P-51 Mustang or F4U Corsair flying, I'll throw a few bucks their way.

It's a hell of a lot more beautiful than the F-35.

It's a common misconception that you have to be rich to be into airplanes.    In the lower categories at reno you can put an entry in on a shoestring.   I know one young man locally who participates every year with his kit racing plane.

Reno has had some issues due to the P-51 crash in the unlimited class a few years ago, rising insurance etc.   It's pretty spectacular though and it's what keeps a lot of innovation in aviation alive.

Well then we should.
We already subsidize ballet, opera, the symphony and other things that only rich people and snobs like.
But before the allow that, they need to make it more expensive AND more boring, like Yacht racing

College football:

one side of mouth: "we pay millions of dollars for coaches and facilities but we bring in more in tv and ticket money".

other side of mouth: "please donate to the football program"

Never quite understood it, but there's nothing new or unique about rich people getting donations to continue their expensive hobbies.

You can't run a business like we run our government.  If you're not making money then you need to either increase the cost to the customer, cut back on what you offer or find less expensive alternatives to provide your product/service.  This is simple economics and you're obviously not doing it correctly.  Your marketing could suck too or perhaps your offering to too small a niche market.  When the market kills your product/service they are telling you something.  Listen up!!

How is asking for donations not a legitimate business model for a non-profit organization?

They are flying through the air subby.  You don't have to be rich to watch, just able to look up.  Sure you might have to do so from across the street, away from all the people paying money to sit too close to each other on the stands, with the loud rock music blaring into your ears from a nearby speaker, but still...

Claude Ballse: What? You mean that the license plates haven't been selling like hotcakes? Like the one before it that would up in Nevada's license plate graveyard?

[parrotheadjeff.com image 500x255]

Hey, cut Nevada some slack.  They need license plate ideas besides their big three, "It was cool before the corporations took over from the mob," "Wanna buy a defaulted mortgage?" and "The government nuked us harder than they ever did Japan."

I was involved with one of these types of events in some small mid-western town.

No idea what subby is talking about.  Sure, the guys that owned the planes were either some combination of super wealthy or obsessed with planes.  But the people attending the events were just regular poor people.  The kind of people that would probably never get to see planes up close...particularly now with all the added security at commercial airports.

I'm sure each event is different, but the rich people, they can just fly their plane whenever they want.  The shows are about them sharing what they are passionate about with others.

I really love air racing and I'd love to go watch so I it bothers me that they price the tickets so far beyond the reach of the middle class.  I mean, seriously, who has twelve bucks these days?

The Spruce Goose could barely fly in ground effect, with booming and cracking sounding through the aircraft.

Hughes was smart to put her right back down again.

Not a good airplane.

2013-11-27 02:26:38 PM
Are pilots who go to air shows actually rich? Doesn't seem to me to be much of a high-revenue business, and they probably paid out the wazoo to get their pilot's licenses in the first place.  And I doubt they have a union to make sure the superstars (if there are any) get to fly instead of some cropduster pilot who would die to get his hands on some historic warbirds.

Nevada Commission joins the Reno hospitality industry community in support of the National Championship Air Races
Today, the Commissioners of the Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) unanimously approved a $600,000 sponsorship for the National Championship Air Races. The event, which is the only event of its kind in the world, brings in more than 200,000 visitors to the area each September and has more than $50 million in economic impact on the region. Over the last several months, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) has worked diligently to pursue additional and increased sponsorships, donations and funding to cover an increased insurance premium of $2 million in order to insure the 49th annual event this September. RARA and NCOT will negotiate the details of the sponsorship over the next couple of weeks, finalizing all elements prior to the start of the National Championship Air Races that take place Sept. 12-16, 2012.

Who says were in a bad economy? Somebody is making money out there.

They should be grateful to President Obama for letting them earn so much more than everyone else.
