We decided to order pizza for the guys today as a kind of thanks for everyone being willing to work today and putting in some last minute effort to help get everyone else's last minute car emergencies taken care of before they hit the road for the holiday weekend.  Normally I would order Pizza Hut because I feel like it is a far superior product to some of our other options.  I read that article this morning and decided to go another direction.  It may only be $30 at one store in SW Ohio, but I hope there are others like me and this de3cision hurts the company as a whole for a little while.  I'm going to go get Domino's for the guys, get the rest of these projects done this afternoon and sent everyone home for a long weekend.  Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm so mad at Pizza Hut I probably won't stop there on my way to the movie theater tomorrow.

Sybarite: I'm so mad at Pizza Hut I probably won't stop there on my way to the movie theater tomorrow.

I see what you did there, but there's a difference between the two businesses.  One is always open on Thanksgiving, actually expecting massive sales because for whatever reason people go see movies on Thanksgiving (don't they know there's NFL games on???), and one is never open.

The GM made the correct move and the franchise didn't.  Based on Pizza Hut's FB page, most would agree with this.

I hear that Black Friday sales will begin in August next year, and most stores won't even close on Thanksgiving so as to not miss out on that all important buck they will make.

Pizza Hut has terrible pizza and I don't eat there already, but now I'm totally not eating there even more. Or something.

Can you boycott something you don't already partake in?

I've had potatoes on pizza and they can work, but not mashed.

I'm thinking mushroom truffle puree replaces the tomato sauce base, pick your cheese, and then turkey sausage, bits of squash, and something incorporating cranberries as the topping.

Well, I can definitely understand the owner's motivation for opening the store. If everyone else is opening his store on Thanksgiving and you're not, you could go out of business. In fact, you will go out of business. That is a cold hard truth of economic law. It's something every business owner knows; I myself learned that lesson the hard way, while running a lemonade stand when I was 10. Jimmy the Greek and Fat Rick were my competitors. Jimmy's parents didn't celebrate Thanksgiving, He never told us why, and his family was fresh off the boat and had a lot of weird habits we learned not to ask about. Rick was so fat his parents wouldn't let him eat solid food. It didn't make much sense, and it didn't help with Rick's weight, but back then people found fat kids so revolting they would try anything to fix the problem.
So anyway, to make a long story short. Jimmy and Rick had their lemonade stands open Thanksgiving while I stayed in and watched the Cowboys play. The next day, before I could even make my first pitcher of product, my mother told me I had to go shopping with her.
My lemonade stand never reopened. That was probably the most brutal lesson about business I ever had to learn.

This is not how the food industry works. Unlike retail, people are going to eat on friday despite what they may have eaten on thanksgiving.

Pizza Hut is by far the worst pizza out of all the bad chain pizza out there by far. From now on of I want a greasy cheese-like substance on far too much crust, I'll order a Dominoes Chicago style. Farewell Pizza Slut.

Hope this guy lands on his feet.

I think most of the last 15 Thanksgivings were either cafeteria-style food from where I worked or convenience store sandwiches.  Not that I'm suggesting there's a serious need for Pizza Hut to be open... well, ever.

2013-11-27 12:48:17 PM
He's a shiatty store manager and deserved to get canned.   I briefly ran a Dominos franchise store back around 2001.  Thanksgiving was a hell of a day.  Huge early sales and huge late night sales.  Dead from about 1P to 6P.  Staff big in the morning and late at night, cut down to just me and a single driver through the normal rush hours.  The late drivers were strictly volunteer only basis, but they made huge bank and I didn't have a problem getting volunteers from the guys who had been around a while.

2013-11-27 12:48:33 PM
Going to my parents house on Thanksgiving I would always see people in the Domino's on the way. It always seemed pretty sad. It's Thanksgiving a time where traditionally people cook for themselves. If you aren't going to cook for yourself pizza probably isn't the best option out there. If you're set on pizza you shouldn't get Domino's. I could see that long line of awful choices in the face of every person in that Domino's.

What a saucy response.

Still, let's not be crusty here and come up with cheesy puns... the real story here is that Pizza Hut delivered a hot bubbly mess just in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

What would be nice is if everybody else in the store refuses to go in, even if it means losing a crappy job at Pizza Hut. See how the DM does running the registers, cooking pizzas and delivering them all by himself.

But they'd only be panned once. If Little Caesar's tried this, they'd be pan-panned. It's like rape-rape. After eating a slice of real pizza, any attempt to go have LC or PH results in your body shutting the whole thing down.

What, no Hero tag?

Thanksgiving is a Federal holiday for every American. Not just those who don't happen to work in retail or food service. If you're not doing something that directly impacts society's ability to function (firefighter, cops, EMTs, transit workers), you should get it off.

/funny how most of the people who have to work on the holiday seem to be poor

Friend of mine managed a Dominos back in the day. He would tell me horror stories of how busy they were on T-giving eve. It was one of their biggest sales nights each year. I agree with the Pizza Hut manager's philosophy, but he was shutting down on one of their biggest sales nights of the year, so he was asking to get hammered by corp.

I can't decide if our culture has always been this crass, or if it's only since the rise of the New John Birchers who view anyone making under $100,000 a year as no better than slaves.

Right, everyone is just outraged that this restaurant is forcing their employees to work on Thanksgiving.

Why do you think they're open on Thanksgiving?  Because customers are coming in on Thanksgiving.  The same people who are outraged are going to go to a restaurant, or walmart, or other business on thanksgiving.  "We're so outraged that people have to work on Thanksgiving at pizza hut!  Now let's go to Applebees and stop on the way home at Walmart for some early black friday shopping.  I'm sure THOSE employees don't mind working on thanksgiving".

Since the american public goes shopping and eats at restaurants on holidays, the american public doesn't have the right to complain about poor unfortunate workers having to work those days.  They're working those days because you of, dumbasses.

The CEO of Pizza Hut and the corporate board of directors should work on Thanksgiving at this store - as the servers, cooks, and line workers.

See for me Dominoes is the worst tasting of the pizza chains. I'm not usually all that picky, I actually enjoy most of the pizza chains that many Farkers are too cool to enjoy and denounce as "tasting like shiat" when they really mean "Shiat, is it cool or not cool to like food from big chains? What does that say about me? Have I ever actually eaten there? Fark it, I'll just tell everyone I hate it. Can't go wrong following the crowd right?". I enjoy Pizza Slut, Rocky Rococo's, Papa Johns, Papa Murphy's and a few other chains I can't think of off the top of my head. Just for some reason I can't stand Dominoes.

And very few franchise owners have to work.

2013-11-27 12:58:57 PM
A lot of people out there have to work on ALL of the major holidays. The overtime pay is probably pretty sick, and I usually chose to take a shift back when I had that kind of job. It's not the whole day so you still have time to celebrate. If you don't like it, get a new job.

Their FB looks a lot like Wal-mart's about 90% of commentators condemning them for being open on Thanksgiving, angry at what they've done etc.  People ARE pretty pissed that corporate America seems to be invading a "sacred" space and turning it into one more day to milk for revenue.  And, none of it matters.  Wal-mart is not reconsidering, K-mart is one-upping them by opening EARLY on Thanksgiving and staying open 41 straight hours till 11 Friday.  etc etc

Anger be dammed the stores have decided they'll probably make more by being opened than closed so, they're open
