I was looking for video of the crowds getting a little crazy in West Palm Beach and stumbled on this blog the local TV station there is using to cover this:

I read it as the knife-wielder also had the gun and both lost.

The My Little Pony Killer: I'm going to be working food service tomorrow, and I'm going to be trying my damndest to be peppy and friendly to people tomorrow. Hungry as hell AND stupid enough to try to stop on Black Friday is just a bad combination when it comes to stress.

Why is someone in food service going to be hungry? How shiatty is the place you work?

Seems like Amazon is matching many of the Black Friday deals offered by the brick and mortar retail stores.  So I'll be doing my shopping at home while having a few beers.

Brainsick: DJShamrock: My girlfriend wanted to go shopping tonight. I told her "I am disapoint." So she went to bed instead. Aw.

/watching Steelers-Broncos

I don't condone shopping with significant others, but...you can't DVR nookie

/just sayin'

Why watch a DVR game since the Steelers played the Ravens last night?

someone got punched in the nose at the local walmart.  other than that, it was pretty calm and organized.

opening so much earlier probably spreads the customers out just enough to make it less chaotic for everyone. nice work china welfare mart.

i don't buy the 'oh you poor employee' argument. job seekers should know what they're getting into in any profession. want every pitiful holiday off? go work at a bank. retailers feed off customers, not employees.

hope y'all had a great tasty feast! have a nice weekend!

Snarfangel: Some people consider that opening a store on Thanksgiving is crass and annoying to the people who work at said stores, and only stretches out the period people buy stuff without increasing overall sales, but it's well-known that Canadian stores sell twice as much Christmas stuff because their Thanksgiving is in October.

That being the case, the solution is clear: We must move Thanksgiving to December 26th, giving retailers a full year to sell their holiday wares.

Conversely, it may be that American stores are run by morons.

I call BULLshiat on that statistic.

Christmas shopping in Canada doesn't start the day after their thanksgiving, it officially starts on November 1st.

The saddest thing this year is that Canadian stores are doing "Black Friday" events this year and there's articles teaching Canadians how to Black Friday shop, it's so sad. However, it must have worked because a good part of my office is either taking the day off or coming in late.

hervatski: ZzeusS: ZeroCorpse: FilmBELOH20: I went to Best Buy at 6:45, waited in line for about 45 minutes, and walked out with a $1000 55" LG LED TV for $500.  I'm ok with that.

So now we have established that $500 is your sellout price to treat your fellow men like wage slaves.

Enjoy the TV. I hope it's a nice replacement for a soul.

By the way... I bought a 50" LG on a normal day last year for $300, so really, all we've established is that you suck at bargain hunting.

I prefer to sit in my bathrobe drinking coffee while they bring it to me.

(yes it's the same deal)

That looks like a store run. Is that a good deal?

I guess.  People were lined up for it.  I picked up a widescreen something something a few years ago for $300 and it works just fine.  I just noticed this on DealCatcher the same time the other guy was going nuts standing in line for 45 minutes.  Thought it was ironic.

How can the statistic be bullshiat? I just made it up! Plus, it clearly explains why it is completely logical for Walmart to march the Christmas shopping season back through the calendar, unlike your "facts" and "reason."

dr.zaeus: ralanprod: Stopped by Best Buy to get an overpriced phone charger last night

It's only overpriced if you're stupid enough not to use their price matching option.

Jesus Christ, people, they even honor Amazon prices.

Every time I've tried to get Best Buy to price match, they've found some excuse not to honour the policy. Just this week they wouldn't match another retailer's price because that retailer was limiting quantities to 2 per customer. Since the item in question was a laptop,  I suggested that it was a bit of a stretch to fold it in to the limited quantities exclusion.

The people that engaged in it around here saved about $1k on appliances for their troubles.

Yeah but whether they could have gotten the same deal a few days down the road is the real question

I highly doubt it.  They were about 50% off MSRP.

picturescrazy: This is what should be open on Thanksgiving: police, fire, rescue, and maybe gas stations.

Some people just don't recognize Thanksgiving as a holiday. Are they supposed to stay home, close their shop and not bring in money? I went to a liquor store last night because *gasp* I didn't plan ahead. The Chinese owner was doing quite the brisk business and was quite happy about it too. I'll pass along your sentiment to him.
The corporate door-buster, oneupsmanship is over the top I believe though

Was at Walmart this morning just to see how it was.

The aisles were crowded with stuff, and there were a few asshats who just had to block the crowded aisles with themselves AND their carts because they couldn't be bothered to move the carts where they aren't blocking the small walkways through the stuff... but it wasn't too bad, otherwise.

The longest line was for cell phones because the clerks have to register those purchases by hand, and it seems like the clerks working the cell phone area were the ones too stupid to get out of that duty on Black Friday (i.e. all the smart workers got out of working the cell phone counter).

The front registers weren't very busy at all.  Not at 8am, anyway. I guess everyone around here got their shopping done yesterday, or are too lazy to get up in the morning.

Scored some odds & ends, but all the doorbusters from Thanksgiving/preBlack Friday were long gone by the time I got there.

/waiting for Cyber Monday anyway

EngineerAU: apoptotic: Apparently we're "celebrating" Black Friday here in Canada now too, as if Boxing Day turning into Boxing Week and then three weeks wasn't bad enough.

I was in Paraguay this time last year and they had Black Friday sales all over the place. If a South American non-English speaking country can't avoid getting sucked into Black Friday, there's no hope for Canada.

/Except maybe Quebec because, well, Quebec is Quebec

I heard even Denmark is having Black Friday sales. WTF?

I'd hate to see what would happen if they all embraced their Viking heritage.

Black Friday.  Where you wait in line and risk life and limb for an appliance you don't need, because you might save half of what you could have earned if you were working and not waiting.

I will admit we did buy something today. Lowe's had an electric stove/heater for $60. Luckily, we ordered it at 5 am online and picked it up in store this afternoon. We were there less than 10 minutes.

Instead of shopping, I put plastic up on my widows to keep the cold out.  Tonight I am going to put up the Christmas decorations and drink a hot toddy.  I feel industrious.
