Manchester United has to win; their group is still up in the air. Real Madrid is almost guaranteed a through spot, but they still won't want to lose since it's not a mathematical certainty. PSG can punch their ticket today with just a draw, but there will still be jostling in Group C.

Bayern and Man City have already guaranteed their spots in Group D, so they may give their benches a run-out.

I hope Man City didn't use up their goal allotment for the week when they shellacked Tottenham on Sunday.

As much as playing in snow sucks, sitting around as a substitute in the snow must be worse. I used to make fun of players wearing snoods, but I'd give them a pass in weather like this.

2013-11-27 12:14:24 PM
Just tuned into the CSKA match and I have to say, who was the practical joker who said this was a perfectly fine pitch for a Champions League match?

2013-11-27 12:18:05 PM
Terrible mistake by CSKA and Bayern made them pay.

Damn Robben, you scary. That was perfectly placed

Same goes for the cutback. Muller got it right behind the rushing defender.

2013-11-27 12:19:51 PM
That's hardly fair. Defenders had a hard time seeing the Bayern players because they're disguised as snow

How bad is the snow? On a scale of 1-Denver during a WC qualifier.

It doesn't look too bad. It's not really accumulating on the pitch. But it's obvious some of the players are uncomfortable. Alaba of Bayern's been making mistakes.

2013-11-27 12:41:37 PM
Bayern is waaaaay closer to doubling their lead than CSKA is to equalizing.

2013-11-27 12:44:33 PM
That CSKA player really milked that contact for all it was worth. That wasn't a hard hit at all.

I'm pretty sure that stadiums at this level of play are required to have undersoil heating, so it's difficult for snow to accumulate on the pitch.
Which is probably also why it looks a bit like a plowed potato field - the ground is wet and soft instead of frozen solid.

2013-11-27 12:48:13 PM
It doesn't look as bad now, but the snow was falling more heavily earlier:

Nowhere near on par with the WC qualifier in Denver, but it still looks cold as hell

Trying to figure out the most meaningful match that is also likely to include goals for the 12:45 start. Leverkusen/Assholes seems to be the winner, but I'm open to suggestions.

Even with 10 men, Real's the one making plays. Galatasaray's playing way too conservative for a team that needs results.

Great night for Utd, but will Moyes learn anything from this about what his best team is? It seems like every time Utd have a good, sharp, fast performance, the next game is a reversion to slow and stodgy.

Nani is also crazy-making. Mostly anonymous for 88 minutes, but that was an excellent take and cool finish.

Great match from United.  Kagawa played great in the No. 10 role, but when RvP gets back what happens?  Smalling and Evans played well and Valencia was the man.  Rooney, as infuriating as he is at times (most times), was wonderful as ever.  Now how to get out of talking to relatives so I can watch Spurs tomorrow.

2013-11-27 06:30:42 PM

Stimied in a Rut: Great match from United. Kagawa played great in the No. 10 role, but when RvP gets back what happens?

Moyes should think seriously about playing RvP up front and Kagawa in behind him, and have Rooney play the attacking midfielder role (which Utd badly need) with license to go forward as he sees fit. He already comes a long way back to pick up the ball when he isn't getting it, and his distribution lately has been superb. Giggs, Cleverly, Jones, or Carrick can play alongside Rooney

With Valencia and Rafael on one side and Buttner and Zanujaj/Zaha on the other, Utd would be lethally quick down both flanks and dangerous through the middle too.
