I'm not saying this because I don't feel for the dude; I'm saying it because I do: If I had this condition I would off myself. I could not live like that.

nothing funnier than people's physical appearance, eh subtard, and other things they cannot change?

Amirite?

At least it was only the embrace that went viral.

neurofibromatosis type 1

I've known a couple of people with this. Or I guess not "known" but they worked in places I went. They weren't as bad, but they both had it on their faces.

And yet, your remark eludes to mental retardation - another thing someone cannot change about themselves. Tard or retard can be pretty hurtful.

Hey, I'm not busting your chops in particular. We can all be pretty insensitive at times. For what it's worth, I'm not too fond of the headline, either. Poor man must suffer some horrible feelings and real shiatty behavior from others.

Popester was obligated to.  Can you imagine the backlash if he was like "Eww...get away from me!"? That would be super unJesusy who liked to chill with lepers and such. Francis was likely sincere though.

There used to be a guy I'd see on the street from time to time who had a nose like that. It reminds me of a famous Renaissance painting of a wealthy merchant with the same condition.

If this is the same condition, it is a very mild case.

I knew a little girl who suffered from some skeletal deformation that made her face look like a Picasso... She underwent nearly-constant surgeries to try to fix it (as her eyes, ears, etc didn't connect up right).  I can't even imagine.

If you were that guy you would probably feel differently being that if you had that condition for most of your life you would likely be a different person even if you genetically the same as you are now (just adding the genes for the horrible disfigurement).

Another famous painting called the Ugly Duchess was the model for Sir John Tenniel's Duchess illustration for  Alice in Wonderland. The original Duchess was a great deal fuglier than Tenniel's caracature. In fact, the Alice in Wonderland Duchess always reminds me of my great-aunt who looked remarkably similar in her later years and wore her long hair up in a bun.

Her family was of medieval Anglo-Dutch origin (with Scottish and English) so that might explain the somewhat mannish teutonic look. She was a sweet, devout woman who looked after other people's children for a couple or three generations as she never married. Imagine that Carroll's Duchess was really an old softy behind the somewhat dour face.

His aunt, Caterina Lotto, says his undershirt is often completely soaked in blood that seeps from the sores.

The new pope is okay and I feel bad for the guy, but I wouldn't want someone with weeping, bloody sores sitting anywhere near me, either.

Neither would I. But then, I'd probably just quietly leave my seat and let the guy sit down.
