Well, this is disappointing. I mean, not that I had a lot of faith in a Spike Lee-directed remake of an Asian cult classic, but still.

2013-11-27 09:07:05 AM
Oldboy was such an unusual movie that the odds of any remake not being terrible were pretty damn close to zero.

Anyone who posts a movie still with a "hammer time" caption gets a cockpunch; let's just get that out of the way.

The only Spike Lee movie I ever liked was "Inside Man".

Ahhh Conservative boomer logic!  Born on 3rd base, thinking they hit a triple while berating someone's lousy play because they do not have a bat.

Sorry - Wrong thread... duh....

I tried to submit the Salon review mentioned in this article.

I never saw the original, and found this intriguing.  But I doubt I'll be hitting the theaters for it.

Also, I'm not much for overly violent movies, so having less in the remake might be better for me.

2013-11-27 12:46:13 PM
I hope people go see and enjoy Spike's rendition, do some research on the story, and then see the original.

There was always a faint chance that a good screenwriter had been hired who had taken the barest outline and reinvented the whole story into a completely different movie.  But given that it's Spike Lee and he's only making this film because it's the only project he can get money for, I don't think that's possible.

Why stop there:  Do Tetsuo the Iron Man, Ichi the Killer, Audition, Cure, do all the cool Asian flicks!
/Cure is probably my favorite for those who haven't seen it, it kinda flies under radar and is very underrated

It's OK.  Spike Lee hates a lot of us too.

Maybe he could borrow some money from fellow independent film maker, Quentin Tarantino.
Oh, wait.

Spike Lee needs to sit down, shut up, and listen to Moms Mabley so he can understand how the world works.

Meh.  I found the original pretty boring, except for the hammer fight.  Can't imagine this one being any better.

I'm gonna farky you to remind me to ask you about it in the next few weeks.  The end is interesting. And up for debate.

The violence in the movie was the least disturbing thing.

The original works because the South Koreans are so farked up about sex, they have Christianity combined with typical Asian attitudes. Something tells me there's a worldwide conspiracy to keep their porn off the internet - thank FSM for that.

Me at the end of the movie: Wait What? WHAT!? WTF!! OH GOD NO!!!! EWWW!!! EEWWW!!! YUCK!!!
Took a shower.
canceled netflix.

2013-11-27 01:24:48 PM
The main thing I liked about the original was that the "captor" is presented as a silky smooth businessman/wealthy elite, who you'd think would have better things to do than imprison and torment a flawed, basically average guy in Oh Dae-su. It only heightens the intrigue of why the hell he has such a fixation on the main protagonist.

You could conceivably change a lot of the storyline around to make any new adaptation worthwhile, but making the captor an obvious creep/psycho just seems like an "American" thing to do and would only weaken the whole plot.

Why remake a relatively recent film? Does Spike Lee think he'll strike it rich with an audience of illiterates*?

* Being illiterate, and therefore unable to read the subtitles on the original, is the only possible reason to be interested in this film.

Because The Departed won four Oscars while being a remake of a 4 year old(at the time) Hong Kong film.

Hollywood has been remaking foreign films in English for a while, Let The Right One In, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and many others.

there is always a chance but it's small. odds are pre Heath Ledger you wouldn't find many people who would have thought that anyone could out-Joker, Nickelson.

the only way to find out if you can improve it is to try. It's not like they destroyed all the copies of the original so I don't get the angst about the remake.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

is another fine example of a remake that had no good reason for existence.

That's actually a good point. I didn't know that was a remake.

The cinematography was great, but yeah.  I thought the other two Vengence movies were much better than Oldboy.

A lot of people don't like subtitles and the books were selling very well here.  I haven't seen the American version, but I get why it exists.

2013-11-27 02:29:23 PM
The trailers actually look pretty decent and Spike Lee is a competent director, but I doubt I'll see this just because there's no reason to. The original is so good I'd rather just watch that again.

2013-11-27 02:31:26 PM
I recommended Oldboy to a friend of mine, and he finally got around to watching it.  He said, quietly, that he was going to take a break from my recommendations for a while.  That movie takes you places you never expected to go.

Don't you get it? If an American filmmaker remakes an Asian movie, then OTHER PEOPLE will hear about it, and I'm no  longer special for watching a foreign movie. It can't be cool if you've heard of it. Spike Lee ruined everything forever.
