I didn't know the was a statute of limitations on outrage. The Nazi were defeated 68 years ago.  Still plenty of outrage concerning them.

I'll wait til after I stop hearing people tell me things like "...but have you really read Das Kapital?"   It's my understanding that things are much better working factories in the UK like the Guinness brewery now, and the Bolsheviks can stand down.

Really  you hear people say that outside of IWW forums?  You much more likely to meet someone who thinks General Pinochet is a swell guy responsible for the "Argentine miracle " than some impassioned defense of Marx.

I just get annoyed with headlines that sound like they came from someone who's still watching VHS bootlegs of Firing Line

Ah, the 'no true Scotsman' defense.  Marxism is a lot like Islam; it may be a fine political theory, but in the real world, it tends to get hijacked by violent sociopaths and lead to a lot of death and misery.

And no, I'm not going to bother reading Das Kapital, anymore than I'm going to waste my time reading the Koran or anything by the Flat Earth Society.

Cagey B: Major political leaders of all ideologies have a body count, especially revolutionaries. News at 11.

But only the body count of Capitalism has to be inflated with the body counts of everyone that died for any reason whatsoever, including religious crusades (because capitalism doesn't condemn religion, therefore it's responsible for everything religious people do), diseases and old age (because people only die of these things due to lack of socialized medicine, unless it happens in a country with socialized medicine, then it's a CIA plot), and crime (because capitalists pay people to break windows to make more money, I saw it in "The Fifth Element" so it must be true). Otherwise it's nowhere near equal to the body counts of fascism or communism, and if you don't want moral equivalence, you're a bigot and a racist.

/makes as much sense as the "No True Communist" fallacy
//and is just as appealing to those that reject both personal and collective responsibility for any of their own actions

2013-11-27 02:42:58 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Lenin relatively low on the body counts?

I mean, he fought the Civil War where the Communists took over, but it was Stalin who deliberately starved out the Ukraine, Stalin who lost 20 Million in WW2, Stalin who was purging everyone because he was completely farking INSANE...

/And then of course, we can head south and see Mao, who was deliberately responsible for killing 100 Million or so between the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, or Pol Pot who, IIRC, managed to kill off half the people he was supposed to be ruling.

That's a very limited grasp on history.  But that is what they teach in American schools.  For instance, did you know during the 1930s the Ukrainians were responsible for the largest slaughter of livestock in the history of the world? They'd rather starve than let those filthy bolsheviks take anything from them.

Further, did you know there was a Ukrainian SS division during WW2?  Crazy shiat you thought you'd never learn, unless you bothered to take the time to do it.

It's 'tenets', not 'tenants'.  Where DID you go to school?

Anyway, logic doesn't seem to be your long suit.  There's no more point debating the fine points of 'true Marxism', than there is debating the merits of 'true' phlogiston theory.

Both have been tried, and both have failed.

Ash heap of history, I believe the phrase is :)

I tried to read Das Kapital but I couldn't get pass 20 pages. Okay I understand why the cost of 10 bolts of cloth should equal one coat but he keep on talking about that for almost 10 pages. Also Das Kapital is in dire need of an editor 3,000+ page book is way too much. Yes I know is in three volumes also Marx didn't live to see the third volume go published. His friend Engels ghost written it. I did read "The Communist Manifesto" it was meh.

Lenin's on sale, again? ;)

Sometimes I wonder if Marx had seen how his work would be abused in the future, if he'd have just quietly burned his own manuscript.  I honestly don't think he set out to crucify tens of millions of workers.

The tenants of Marxism are the Marx Bros. and Slappy John. Of the Marx Bros., Karl is best known for his comedic writing in the vein of G.B. Shaw, but Groucho is better know for his dramatic monologues. Slappy John was a True Communist, having lived in communism his entire life, giving when it was needed, and taking what he needed in return. He communistly goose-stepped around every May Day making sure that Dr. Hegel was standing on his head, and dialectic materialism's truthiness shone through its tired, coal-stained anus.
