Slavery is not a capital offense.  It should be.  It's actually a worse crime than just outright murdering someone.  Taking away someone's freedom like this is so offensive to everything I believe in, I would volunteer to throw the damn switch.

fusillade762: How do you kidnap your own kids? Did someone else have custody of them?

If you share joint custody and flee leaving no new address, with the purpose of keeping the children from the other party, kidnapping is an easy charge to nail. It's the most common form of kidnapping IIRC

Omnis_evil_twin: What the fark is wrong with women?  Why are so many willing to share a bed with their children's rapists or sweep physical abuse under the rug or look the other way when their partner is emotionally abusing their children?  Sure, some men let their second wives terrorize the step-kids but you never hear about some guy standing by while his new wife locked his children in a diddler dungeon.

I think it says a lot about the woman who decides to live with that kind of monster voluntarily. She wouldn't necessarily be malicious as... negligent. A lot of the "quiet" mothers who let the abusive fathers run loose might do it for any number of reasons.

One is the fear of the unknown. They would ask themselves whether or not they or their children could survive without the man around. Regardless of how much of a monster he is -- sometimes the fear of leaving that abusive life behind is even scarier than the abuse itself. Some women may not be able to handle the task of being a single mother. Some might be afraid of the man and that by threatening his control, they might be in danger. They could be living in mortal fear of the man. After all, if she dies... then who knows what could happen to their children if she's dead? She might be deluding herself into thinking she can 'help' or at least 'lessen' the abuse by being around.

She could also be similarly abused by the man. The "quiet" mothers might come from a background of abuse themselves and their warped idea of what a 'good' husband is... would be similar to their own fathers who might have abused them and/or their siblings and mother. Their own warped idea of what a family is 'supposed' to be like could be from their own childhood. There's a chance the man abuses the mother as well, and you just don't hear about it. If not physically assaulting her, he could be mentally and emotionally abusing her whenever she tries to speak up or against him. These monsters are manipulative and they can know the exact buttons to push on another person (particularly a woman they've lived with for some time) to get them to submit to them.

It could also be mental trauma in of itself. The woman could be so shocked she could be desensitized to it. By turning a blind eye and being willfully ignorant of the situation, she saves herself from further emotional damage. By pretending the abuse doesn't exist -- she convinces herself that it doesn't. This isn't just abuse -- this is a trait found in many human beings. We see it all the time in everyday life. We pretend something horrendous doesn't exist, therefore it doesn't. It's a very common coping mechanism -- and completely ineffectual. The mind tries to save itself. This is particularly the case for submissive women who don't like confrontation or conflict. Some would rather suffer and see others suffer than grow a spine and speak up.

The woman is not always a willing partner -- in many cases she's just as abused and manipulated as the children are.

a login name very similar to this one: How do three minors simply stop existing, and no one looks into it?

That's what moving or homeschooling is for.

I guess I'm the first to point it out, but based on the info in the article, the mom was 14 or 15 when she had her oldest daughter, and between 18-20 when she had the other two  I'm guessing she has never had the kind of stability that would help her to realize the crap her husband was doing was totally wrong and she should leave him for the kids.

TheGogmagog: RELATED: ARIEL CASTRO DID NOT DIE OF AUTOEROTIC ASPHYXIATION: REPORT

WTF? Unless I'm mistaken he hung himself in prison. Who thought he just got carried away whacking it?

A not uncommon consequence of autoerotic asphyxiation is accidental strangulation/hanging... apparently there was some detail with how he was found that made them question it.

Or, you know, they just made it up to make him look like an even sicker bastard than he already was.

fusillade762: Richter and the girl's mother, Sophia Richter, 32 were arrested and each charged with three counts of kidnapping

How do you kidnap your own kids?  Did someone else have custody of them?

The kidnapping statute in Arizona is very broad.  Essentially, any time you purposefully restrict someone from leaving an area, it's kidnapping.   Source.

And yay, my home town made the news.  Not quite Ariel Castro, but still an ugly story.
