Does Kanye really think he's going to have any affect at all on LV sales?  Or is he confusing the handbags they sell on sidewalk tables in NY with the real thing?

Yes, yes he does

I also think this sums up the LA mindset perfectly:

Speaking on 92.3 NOW radio, he said: 'I was made for this moment. What happened was while I was out in Paris I wanted to meet with the head of Louis Vuitton, he said I don't understand why we need to meet with you.

This isn't a Kanye specific problem.  In Hollywood, if you believe your stock is high enough, then you think you're doing everybody a favor if you "meet" with them.  There's no measure of your "stock" other than what you think of yourself, and since you believe you are doing the favor, you don't do any prep work.  I'd completely buy that Kanye showed up in Paris, demanded to see someone higher up in LV, and they had no idea what the fark he was doing there.  Kanye probably didn't have any idea why he was there outside of some esoteric branding coexistence that exists only in his head.  It's a truly bizarre industry.

If you can afford to pay a ridiculous amount for a wallet, you can sometimes pick up "last year's" wallets for under $500 at some of their stores.  If my experience is any indication, your girl will keep that wallet until long after it falls apart because they don't make very good wallets.  Bonus - she can put it in any shiatty purse she wants, but when she pulls it out while shopping, she automatically announces she's got money, even if she doesn't.  Women LOVE that.

She's also not wedded to carrying the same purse around.  Louis Vuitton does not make a good all-around purse, so she'll have to use something else for day to day use anyway.  The wallet is a better purchase.

Wow, thanks for the advice! I actually needed a good idea for a present this Christmas. She's got a lot of various purses (mostly inherited from her mom, who can afford LV type purses), but only one wallet.

If you want to go with an expensive brand, I'd recommend Coach personally. Probably about half as much. Buy the leather stuff though. I don't get why anyone would pay for LV, most of their sh*t is made from cloth and probably manufactured at the same child labor camp that makes baby clothes for the Gap.

I think designer brands are mostly a sham, but I suppose there is a certain point at which if you want a leather good that is well-made you have to fork over some money. I guess. My wife buys Coach and the items hold up longer than she is interested in keeping the same purse/wallet. That's her thing. Me, I like building powerful PCs with my extra cash.

I see a lot of LV luggage around airports these days. Why yes, I do want to spend the down payment on a decent home for a matching set of luggage that's thrown around by guys making $10/hour onto conveyor belts and have some dipshiat from TSA rummaging through it.

I just literally can't fathom what's going through their head when they buy it.

I've had the same Coach wallet for ten years, and if I have to buy a purse for my wife, Coach is the way to go because it's cheaper and purses can't be used for a decade.  Coach's quality in leather goods production is definitely better - my wallet has outlasted the LV one.  HOWEVER:  sometimes women like having a "fark you world" item to show off and Coach isn't anywhere near the same level as Louis Vuitton.  Personally, I'd only be impressed with an LV steamer trunk ala "Joe Vs. the Volcano":

img802.imageshack.us

...but my wife thinks different.

Coach is a gold bracelet.  Louis Vuitton is a diamond tennis bracelet.

scottydoesntknow: Wow, thanks for the advice! I actually needed a good idea for a present this Christmas. She's got a lot of various purses (mostly inherited from her mom, who can afford LV type purses), but only one wallet.

The Louis Vuitton wallet I bought my wife eight years ago has fallen apart, frayed at the edges, and looks like shiat.  The leather is splitting on one end at the hinge.  It's also the only thing she carries with her every day.  I've purchased expensive purses that get unceremoniously retired because they are no longer fashionable (thanks Burberry), but she carries that wallet inside a 10 dollar beach bag if we're on vacation.  Women change purses, but they don't often change wallets.  Get a really good one, and she'll hang on to it as long as you hang on to yours.

This reminds me, it's probably time for me to buy her a new wallet.  I stupidly thought $600 in 2003 would buy a wallet that would last a lifetime.  Haha, rich farkers get new wallets every year, so they don't build them to last.

You will still get massive props for a Louis Vuitton wallet if you can find one in your budget.  And it will serve as a constant reminder of you, YOU, because she will use it until it dies.

Most of it is fake.  I was in NY last new year's and you could get an entire LV "set" for $150 at every third shop.  My wife is an IP attorney who did work for them (and Samsonite, and numerous others) and listening to her point out "tells" about fake luggage at airports is exactly as exciting as it sounds.  She's like a watchmaker pointing out fake Rolex's.  There are a tremendous amount of fakes out there.

I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but the "LV" initial pattern has some rule about not getting cut off in a seam, or something like that.  So if you see an edge with a cut off initial, it's fake.  Then again, I wasn't listening, so that could be entirely wrong.  I do remember that the zippers are all branded, so that's an easy tell.

I get LV. Its tough, good looking leather. Its perfect seams and patterns. It screams quality, even if I can't stand the way it looks with the patterns so gaudy and in your face.

What I don't get is Prada. Cheap vinyl or nylon materials with ugly locks and a paste-on emblem? Please, girlfriend, go take that shiat back to the store and exchange it for a brown paper bag because it makes you look like shiat.

You spent about $100 on a wallet and $500 on a name. As someone who works in luxury retail I can tell you that most brands are made with the same leather, or sometimes the higher end brands are made with a more delicate leather. Most of the money you spend is on name and status. And the louder your wallet or purse screams a brand name (covered in company logo like CC, GG) the louder it tells the world that you don't have excess wealth but you sure as heck are trying to tell people you do.

Also, people treat an expensive wallet the same as they would treat a cheaper wallet. Oh sure, the first month or two you slowly open the wallet and carefully take your money or cards out, but once you've had it a while and it's your everyday wallet, you treat it the same as you'd treat a nylon and velcro wallet.

Also, any leathergood needs to be moisturized as soon as it starts to look dry otherwise it will eventually crack and rip. Leather is animal skin and much like your skin, needs that moisture to stay soft. I've seen what happens to leather when it's neglected, it's not pretty, and you can't fix that rip.

Quite a few professions have certain unwritten (but verbally and culturally enforced) norms like this.  Consultants at one of the big guys, for example, are expected to have a very nice car, certain brands of suits etc...  Attorneys at certain law firms are the same way.  I also imagine that a lot of Wall Street firms have similar codes.

Third recommendation. My partner, my sister and my daughter all buy Coach. When my daughter goes to London twice a year to visit her mother, one of her "must visit" spots is the Coach shop in New Bond and/or the shop on Regent Street. My partner has given me both a wallet and a money clip from Coach and they really are the best such items I've ever had.

I know his power well.  He's the man to whom race is a major issue but doesn't have the IQ to understand the dynamics.  He tries to talk about race anyways and does a terrible job.  And when one of the most important events in recent world history happens and a black man is elected president, that leader of the free world calls Kanye a jackass.  Though he should have done it long before, Kanye should have disappeared right at that moment.
I'm not sure why we're talking about handbags, though.

GreenAdder: Hundreds of dollars for a farking purse or wallet? Jeez. I guess I don't have a horse in this race.

I have a wallet that looks like a Nintendo controller. I think it cost $15. It keeps all of my cards and identifications neatly and fits in my pocket.

I bought a somewhat rugged leather wallet with a chain from the local state fair probably 7 or 8 years ago for I think $20 that I still have. The design on the thing is a bit faded, but other than that the wallet is holding up pretty damned well. The chain hasn't lasted as well, but I only really wear that when I'm riding so it's not a big deal and it's pretty easy and somewhat cheap to replace a wallet chain.

If you're spending hundreds of dollars on a designer wallet that rarely even sees the light of day, you're a damned fool.

CSB Time:

While in Milan I visited many of the major name fashion stores. Two of those stores stand out to me. LV did everything in their power to pressure me to leave the store because they employees didn't think that I had the money to buy anything in their store. I was followed around and given dirty looks and at one point even told that I couldn't afford anything in the store and that I should leave. I stayed even longer because of the treatment that I received from the staff. I then walked across the street to the Prada store. There the staff treated me like a customer and tried to help me find something. I wound up buying a couple of things at the Prada store and promptly walked back across the street to the LV store to walk through it again with my Prada bags in hand. I was received much better this time and the staff was suddenly trying to be helpful. I promptly told them to f**k off and said that I would never buy anything from any LV store ever because of the way that you treated me earlier. I have sense told my wife that she will never get anything from LV and she completely understands. Regardless of Kanye I will never buy from LV.

Also take a look at Niccoli purses and wallets. Niccoli is another high end designer, but they only have one store in the United States the last time that I checked. It is in Miami, FL. I went to their factory and purchased 5 purses from the factory while in Italy and every one of them was very high quality and I spent half of what it would have cost at any other place. They have a website and ship to anywhere. I have sense bought two more Niccoli purses for my wife and she loves them both. You may not have the name recognition, but you will get the quality and if your girl is good she'll play up the line that it is only available in Europe and Miami, but she has one.

Lsherm: I also think this sums up the LA mindset perfectly:

You sir have summed this up exactly.

AverageAmericanGuy: I get LV.

I have an LV wallet. Replaced the Coach fabric exterior I'd had for 6 years and was starting to fray. I'm pretty happy with it. But as a guy it's purely a CC an license holder. No big show when I take it out to pay but I was looking for quality and I got it with the LV. I also picked a subtle exterior print on the leather, not the emblazoned logo that screams "look at me".

FLMountainMan: Bslim: You HAVE to use a designer bag for work? What sort of work is this?

Quite a few professions have certain unwritten (but verbally and culturally enforced) norms like this.  Consultants at one of the big guys, for example, are expected to have a very nice car, certain brands of suits etc...  Attorneys at certain law firms are the same way.  I also imagine that a lot of Wall Street firms have similar codes.

I can attest to this.  I am beginning to go through this now.  I drive an old Ford Escort, live in a rancher that is constantly under renovation, and wear yoga pants all the time. I cannot stress enough that I farking hate shopping.  I have two teenagers, and two large dogs, so I really dont give a shiat who or what I wear.  Then my husband was promoted to VP, first he gets a company car, then he went shopping because he had to dress the part.  He spent more money on clothes in one day than I had all year.  Then he suggested I get an SUV and maybe some new outfits. The SUV is fine, I needed more room for the kids and the dogs.   I'm stalling on the clothing part.  Finally, I lost it and drew the line when he wanted to move to a different neighbourhood and get a bigger house like all "the others".  fark that noise, more to clean and I like my neighbours.  If you judge and base your impression on me by what I have then I don't want to associate with you.

Actually that is totally on topic.  If you spend that much money on something it should last a long time.  Because of that, I have only bought Columbia ski jackets/pants/boots etc. for my boys.  The way boys grow, they've made a mint off me.  They last forever and I can hand them down to my cousin, who's struggling to raise her two boys.

I have a black leather "Independent" wallet that I bought 12 years ago for $20 at I don't even remember where, probably either Spencers or Hot Topic. It was originally rough and suede-like and was actually extremely inconvenient to place in or remove from my pocket. It has in the ensuing years been polished down to a smooth, glossy sheen, and shows no real signs of wear other than a single slightly loose thread. I don't even know if Independent is still a brand, but if for that kind of money I can buy something that for all appearances so far will last me a lifetime, I can't think of a single reason why I would ever want to spend more.

My mother (a new money German protestant married to a Catholic) suffers from reverse snobbery.  She wants to appear to have less money than she actually does, so that other people won't think that she got the money in an underhanded way or is showing off.

This exemplifies the real problem I have with Louis Vuitton stuff- it is butt freaking ugly. To me it has no value other than to show people you could afford to buy it just because of its sheer ugliness. I've never seen any purse/luggage etc of theirs that was anything short of ugly to me.
