(The Daily Caller)   So you grew a mustache for Movember? Congratulations, now the editor of the University of Toronto's student newspaper would like to let you know that you're "sexist, racist, transphobic, and misinformed"   (dailycaller.com) divider line 269

Uh, subby... The article appears in the McGill Daily, not UofT's student paper (The Varsity).  McGill University is in Montréal, 543 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

"To be completely clear, you don't have to be a man to have a prostate, and you don't have to have a prostate to be a man," Haddad proclaims.

No, but you do have to have a prostate to get prostate cancer. And I say this as a woman who is RIGHT NOW wearing a mustache sticker in support of Movember.

We can stop with the Pink shiat- everyone knows about breast cancer- but prostate cancer is among the leading killers of men and we DO need more awareness of the benefits of early detection.

This isn't transphobic in any way. M-F Transpeople are at a HIGHER risk of prostate cancer, because they don't think to get tested.

Subby must be a Harvard graduate.

As for the author of TFA...I love this quote: '"Moustache" is the over-lettered Canadian spelling'.  Author is wrong.  It is the ENGLISH spelling, so that pretty much makes it correct.

I should correct myself - since moustache is originally of French origins, but it's still spelled correctly if you have the "u" follow the "o".

But Oxford agrees with my first statement.  http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/moustache

So, Movember is sexist, racist, transphobic, and misinformed but no word on Novembeard?

I'm currently rocking a beard for our annual Novembeard charity contest. I'm full "mountain man" currently and working my way towards Grizzly Adams. I joined up because I hate shaving.

2013-11-26 06:28:37 PM
As a man with a beard, I find Movember to be completely ridiculous and pointless, like putting a pink ribbon on the back of your car "in support of Breast Cancer research." It's slacktivism at its most obvious.

what_now: but prostate cancer is among the leading killers of men

Not really. It's roughly 1/5 of all cancer deaths, which is about 1/4 of all deaths among men, so it's really only ~5% of deaths. But, the thing about prostate cancer is that it is very treatable, and the survival rates once it's diagnosed are very, very good (like, > 90%), so there's no reason anyone should die from it, and it's good to remind men to get checked if they're over 50.

Sounds to me like Ralph Haddad can't grow a decent moustache to save his life.

I've never heard of Movember. It sounds like a made-up word that Ryder or some other sort of rental truck or moving company would come up with.

You wanna talk about sexist. If I see one more guy driving around in a truck with a pink "Save 2nd Base" sticker, I'm going to be the subject of a fark headline. Also,

"To begin with, he says, the concept discriminates against transgender people by linking masculinity "to secondary male characteristics, including having a prostate" and the ability to grow facial hair."

This statement is so dumb that I'm not even sure where to begin to parse it.

I figured. McGill is the one whose LGBT Services includes:

"those who identify as queer and/or any combination of agender, ally, ambigender, ambisexual, androgyne, asexual, bigender, bisexual, birl, biromantic, boi, butch, crossdresser, drag ruler, femme, gay, gender-adjacent, gender anarchist, gender creative, genderfluid, genderless, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, gender transcendent, graysexual, heteroflexible, homoflexible, homoromantic, homosexual, intergender, intersex, lesbian, multigender, neutrois, non-heterosexual, omnisexual, pangender, panromantic, pansexual, polygender, polysexual, pomosexual, questioning, same gender loving, sexually fluid, stone, third gender, third sex, tran(s)sexual, trans, trans*, transgender, trigender, and Two-Spirit. In addition, Queer McGill welcomes any students whose identities do not fit into the Western heteronormative gender binary, whether or not they identify as queer."

2013-11-26 08:25:34 PM
It's not often you see the word "heteronormative" used in a non-ironic way these days. It's rare, like seeing a white buffalo or a Prius driver who can parallel park.

2013-11-26 09:47:21 PM
Wow, three idiots in one.

First, we have the idiot at McGill who fails to get the picture and writes such idiocy in the first place. The dude needs to get a grip.

Second, we have the idiot on this site who, in his self-righteous panty-twisting rage, "debates" the issue with infantile attacks on the entirety of another country. Seriously? This guy is the "Education Editor" for the site? Find another, he's not qualified.

Thirdly, we have the subby who is clearly the least educated of the lot in that (s)he is incapable of parsing the sentence  And McGill is generally ranked with the University of Toronto... such that (s)he can distinguish that by use of the term  with that there are two different schools mentioned in the article.

I'm with the overly dramatic hippie wannabe, if only because at 45 years of age, I still can't grow a proper looking mustache.  There's a gap in the middle and I have Welsh thin hair, so it comes in looking like an attempt at a broader Hitler mustache but without any body to it.  Hell, I can't even grow proper sideburns - no male in my family can.  I only shave daily because otherwise people think I have dirt on my face.

When they start having Powdember - a month dedicated to looking like that kid from Powder - I'm gold.

I had to shave halfway through November. I didn't get so much a 'mighty lumberjack beard' but more of a 'curled basement dweeling neckbeard'.

Have to be able to wear SCBA at work. No beards for me, either. It sucks.

/actually, if you don't have a good seal, it doesn't suck, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make.

Maybe you idiots should stop arguing about which cancer is more deserving of attention and just pick one and move forward. If someone wants to wear pink socks or grow a mustache, fine. Just don't be a whiny little b*ych because they picked a cause.

FTFA:
"To be completely clear, you don't have to be a man to have a prostate, and you don't have to have a prostate to be a man," Haddad proclaims.
The English and cultural studies major argues that Movember "implies an archaic view of gender that implies that only a male/female gender binary exists, and that you aren't really a man if you don't necessarily identify with that binary."

Yes, you need to have a prostate to be a man.
And yes, it's a binary. Deal with it. Gender is a mental thing, a social construct, not a physical aspect. People with penises are men, people with vaginas are women. Deal with it. Trans can do whatever changes they want. It's their body, I don't care.

Ya the "gender identity is whatever you want it to be" people need to understand this: You are biologically, medically, a certain gender (it can be one of the more rare ones with higher order chromosomes). Doesn't matter what your brain feels, what you look like, etc, your body has certain parts, it produces certain hormones, that matters to medical science. Understanding and acknowledging this is NOT transphobic, it is dealing with reality. You can have a biological gender that is male, have yourself surgically altered to have a general female appearance, and mentally feel different from either of those. None of that changes your biology, your genes, etc.

Maybe we need some better terminology to separate the levels we are talking about (biology, physical appearance, mental identity) but mostly I think it is that members of the trans community need to chill out. Sorry, but gender is NOT all in the mind, it isn't something you just decide and everything else falls in to place. Your body grows certain bits and if you are male, one of those bits is the highly defective prostate. You can't wish it away, changing your gender identity doesn't change problems with it.

I'm not a fan of facial hair in men. Not that you've asked, however, I do like stubble. Go to sleep, man's cheek is smooth. Wake up, man's cheek is all stubbly. Rowr.

I tried to keep my mustache but the hairs kept tickling my lower lip so I shaved both of them off. While I was there I shaved off the single hair growing out of my neck too. Wait, what were we talking about?

Go see your doctor guys.

No, it is the BRITISH spelling (of which Canadian is a flaccid imitation) which makes it retarded. ENGLISH is a language spoken in the US, India, and many other parts of the world in a far richer and more diverse manner than than found in Britain or Canada.
