" Ahhh! Woooh! What's happening? Who am I? Why am I here? What's my purpose in life? What do I mean by who am I? Okay okay, calm down calm down get a grip now. Ooh, this is an interesting sensation. What is it? Its a sort of tingling in my... well I suppose I better start finding names for things. Lets call it a... tail! Yeah! Tail! And hey, what's this roaring sound, whooshing past what I'm suddenly gonna call my head? Wind! Is that a good name? It'll do. Yeah, this is really exciting. I'm dizzy with anticipation! Or is it the wind? There's an awful lot of that now isn't it? And what's this thing coming toward me very fast? So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like 'Ow', 'Ownge', 'Round', 'Ground'! That's it! Ground! Ha! I wonder if it'll be friends with me? Hello, Ground! "

Exactly. And anyone who's opened a can of surströmming knows that's not botulism making the can bulge like that; it's just the stench trying to escape.

It's actually the botulinum trying to escape the stink of the surstromming!

Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: Usually takes a few hundred pounds of dynamite to explode a whale

Yeah I really don't see how that could be just compressed gas from decomposition. That was a huge amount of force. Why wouldn't it just cause the belly to stretch first before it burst as opposed to what we saw?

I went on a whaling mission with my Icelandic grandfather in the early 80s. His crew harpooned a couple of whales and brought them back to port. I remember vividly as they unseamed both whales on the dock and seeing a bloody version of the tauntaun gutting and blood pouring down into the fjord. I have a nice photo of a 5 year old me standing next to the two gutted whales. I remember not liking the meat. I wasn't a big fan of sheep head either.

Memories.

The stomach is probably much stretchier than the skin, and when it was nicked (or didn't have enough skin over it holding it together) it popped.

It doesn't take much pressure to get that kind of reaction. Think about explosive decompression on a commercial plane and the kind of damage it can do. Cabin pressure is usually around 4.6psi at the lowest (~15 at sea level). At 30,000ft the ambient air pressure is around .2psi. That's only a difference of around 4.4 psi. But a hole the size of a quarter is enough to cause EVERYTHING in the plane to rush out that hole, making the hole bigger as it does.  The amount of organic material inside a whale, including the whale itself, is certainly enough to generate a few psi of pressure. One little tear is all it takes to get it started. Then JENGA! you're a winner!

It's happened before

And another time

The microbal action in the gut keeps right on going even thought the whale has died.

People do the same thing, bodies burp and fart in the morgue all the time.

Wrong.  This is not how explosive decompression works.  It takes a hole much larger than a quarter to suck out the contents of a pressurised cabin; in fact the design of the ribs and support structure is meant to contain fuselage failures to a single ten-inch square vent.  Something like Aloha 243 only happens when a huge chunk of the fuselage fails (and it failed because of corrosion and materials fatigue in multiple areas, not the initial shock of decompression).
