Yes.  The average Brits got more states right.

Why is this one in there? It's clearly the work of a genius.

Yeah, that one is SERIOUSLY impressive.

I could get every single one easily, but ask me about the same provincial equivalents in the UK?  Couldn't name a one.

Well, Glamorganshire, if that's a thing.  But only because I have a recent immigrant ancestor from there.

This.

All I'm seeing from my skim is flipping Montana and Wyoming  (And at a certain point, all those dry, big empty Western states start looking the same anyways).

2013-11-26 06:33:33 PM
They didn't ask them to draw the outlines this time?

I got a laugh out of a few of those.

*points to North Carolina* I have been here! (unless that's not where New York is.)

I was also surprised how many people got the Dakotas but not much else. Weird.

We have 50 states. Fifty! I don't expect any foreigners to know even half of them.

That being said, I wonder how American students would fair on the same challenge.

I kinda like these maps better!

I used to be able to name the counties of Ireland years and years ago. But they did a great job and they were amusing as well. A lot of american kids probably couldnt have even picked out their own state.

2013-11-26 06:39:13 PM
I'm impressed. But why do the British know our geography so well? Are they planning on invading? This is how it always starts, Montezuma asks you for open borders, then he finds out where all your cities are, and then you've got like 15 jaguar warriors romping across your land.
We should probably bomb them before it's too late.

2013-11-26 06:41:10 PM
I don't expect ANY foreigners to be able to label the states on a blank map. I'm not even sure I could do it without mixing up some of flyover country.

2013-11-26 06:41:13 PM
They did better than I'd likely do trying to name areas of the United Kingdom.

2013-11-26 06:42:08 PM
What got me was almost every one of them knew where Texas was...

2013-11-26 06:47:41 PM
Some of those pics weren't half bad. I could manage to pick out England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland if you asked me about the british isles, but that's about it.

How the average Teabagger sees America:

That's pretty good. I seriously doubt that most Americans could correctly identify all of the Mexican states.

The two states EVERYONE got right: California and Texas.

Q. Haven't we heard that you're the two worst states ever?

A. Yes, but you HAVE heard of us....

I doubt I could name more than a few counties in England much less label them on a map.

Much better than I expected.  But if you really want to trip up a European, ask them to estimate distances.

I worked with Frenchmen who thought the US was only 800 miles across.  I've known English visitors to Washington DC who think they can be in Disneyworld in 90 minutes.

When I showed the frogs that Texas and France were the same size, I looked at them and said "Now you understand why we don't take the train"

They're called counties. The UK doesn't have states or provinces, at least not in Great Britain itself. I could probably point out two or three. I've been to Dorset, and Essex is just east of London. ::checks:: I probably would have misidentified Kent as Essex. I probably could name maybe a dozen if put to it, but I couldn't locate them properly on a map.

macdaddy357: Now, let's see how many Americans can successfully label England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland on a map of the British Isles.

Don't have a map, but:

Ireland is the little island to the Left of the big island.
Northern Ireland is the north of the little island because religion and politics.
Scotland is the North of the Big Island
Wales is the left-middle of the Big Island.
England is the rest of the Big Island

Just because you call it a country, doesn't make it anymore than a large state to U.S. Have a hand at naming all 88 of these:

I could only name Devon and Cornwall because I played Avalon Hill's War of the Roses game in high school.

I'm far from dumb, but I would even have a slight problem remembering right away some of the states out west.  I could actually label UK countries though.

Okay then, they look a hell of a lot better than Americans would labeling Europe.

Or placing where the top 10 cities in England are located.

That one is evil since spelling counts.  I got Massachusetts on the third try but after the fifth attempt at Connecticut i said fark it and gave up.

I can name around 45/47 of the European states.
