Oh FFS, leave that girl alone.  Is this really necessary?

Why is the victim of bullying the one getting in trouble?  Distraction?  I call bullshiat.  Do they have this policy with all bullied kids?  If an asian kid is getting bullied to they ask that kid to change their physical appearance?  Ask deaf kids to be less deaf?  WTF?

Teach the other kids in class to stop being assholes.  There are allll kinds of people in the world so they better get used to it.

1) Florida

2)) When you go to private school, especially religion-based private school, you have to play by their rules, even when they're arbitrary and stupid. And you have to pay them a lot for the privilege of playing by their stupid arbitrary rules.

3) Her hair looks really cute in the bottom vid, but I bet she poofs it out as big and sloppily as she can on a regular basis. Which I have no problem with - I like teh crazy hair. But there is indeed some hair trolling going on. (Again, fine by me. You go girl)

4) Why didn't they ask her to put it in a ponytail or braid? Are we sure cutting it off was the only choice given? Because that would be idiotic, even for Florida.

5) Sucks to be the kid sitting behind her. I wonder if mom would have a problem if the school said she had to sit in the back row in every class?

6) Florida

Her hair looks farking cool, and she'd be great to sit behind in class and take naps without the teacher seeing.

EXPEL THE BULLY!!!
Problem solved.
Let the other parents know that your zero tolerance policy is going to be enforced.

WHY havent the parents not sued the school for supporting bullying???

Some children were making fun of my curly hair one time at a store.  The parent stepped in and I thought there would be a voice of reason.  Nope, instead she told me I hold myself open for looking that way.

Just because you can grow a 3-foot wide ball of hair on your head, doesn't mean you have the right too.  She can be required to neaten that shiat up without it being the white man's chain around her neck.

Shame. First, I like the natural fro look. Second, if you want to talk about natural, that's what a fro is. That's what black hair is like. When you see a black woman with straight hair, they either slopped on tons of nasty chemicals to do it, or sat in a chair upwards of seven hours to get extensions. Neither of those are natural options. If anything, they seem silly to me. Ever since I watched Chris rock's documentary on black hair, I see the natural look as a sign of a confident, intelligent person.

The real problem with her hair?

Doorways.

2013-11-27 12:05:34 AM
Well, the parent is sending her to a private school, which instantly means that any legal action should be thrown out on the grounds of "you're choosing to send your kid there."

Not to mention, that would piss me off if I had to sit behind her in class, especially if it's assigned seating and the teacher isn't allowing me to move. No matter what you think you have the right to do, you don't have a right, as a student, to infringe on another student's right to learn.

On the other hand, the bullies are douchebags.

(It's not anything that doesn't happen every other day though. 12 year olds are asshats.)

Yes, actually you do have that right. The right to express yourself is about the most basic human right there is.

I don't get it.  The government has nothing to do with this story.  But I don't think there's ever been a time in our country's history that kids in schools have enjoyed the unabridged right to "express yourself."

I'm not sure that  even a private school can tell you to cut your kid's hair to an "acceptable" style. The examples they give--mohawks, rattails, shaved-in designs--are all STYLES, as in, you have to alter your hair to make it that way. If this girl's hair is indeed naturally the way it is, and they're requiring her to alter it to bring it into conformity, the school is going to have to explain what that conformity actually IS.

In other words, as in any free speech restriction (of which hair style is one) the burden is on the restrictor to define the restriction. They can't just say "Well, it's not that," and expect to get away with it. At least, that's what I'd be arguing if I was this girl's lawyer.

My sister-in-law has hair like that. (She's Hispanic, though.) I've seen the pictures from high school, and...wow. It's a miracle she could get through doorways.

Although how the fark is this in any way different from the way hair was done in the 1960's with the beehives reaching for the heavens? My mother had a foot-tall 'do that she says scraped against doorjambs back in the day. So shut the hell up with the "But--hair! Bad!" because it's no different.

If cutting your hair is like sacrificing your identity you may want to work on new aspects of personal growth.
Neil Young and her could have a great conversation, "You know Vanessa, I almost cut my hair once....it was gettng kinda long. But I didn't.."

And it's natural for teenage boys to have scruffy, eye-covering hair. And not to wash it. But nonetheless a private school is bound to have some grooming requirements. I don't think asking her to keep it a little shorter, or a little less puffed out borders on actual discrimination against her.

Since this is a Christian private school, I can guarantee you that all the white girls have hair down to their knees, and don't get hassled for it.

CSB warning.

Back in high school a few decades ago our principle instituted a no hair past your shoulders for boys.  We had a lot of stoners/hippies/kids with nothing to fight, so they raised hell and got the news involved who got the entire school district involved.  Arguments and threats of lawsuits went back and forth and tied it all up until graduation.  At graduation the graduating kids including myself took our diploma, shook his hand with a smile and handed him a hair tie.  He just stood there smiling and let them fall to his feet.  I glanced down as I walked away, there was a huge farking pile of hair ties, it was a mound of them.
/csb

This principle needs to grow a farking spine and deal with the troublemakers.
