I don't care what the job was, nothing is interesting enough to me to take a $40K+ pay cut. The guy is an idiot.

I like copyranter. Also, fark Buzzfeed.

2013-11-26 04:13:06 PM
Ok, so you weren't good at your job, you didn't work well with other people, and you admit you are an asshole.

Yeah, that's why you were fired.

Prety-much.  The incessant drumming (It's a part of me!  So, I'm not really responsible for it!) would have done it for me.  After the first 3 tiems telling him to knock it the fark off, I'd can his ass.

So I took a $43,000 annual pay cut to leave my small New York City ad agency, where I had worked as a copywriter for 20 straight years, to come to work for Ben Smith and BuzzFeed.

That was your first mistake.

Getting fired from BuzzFeed is about as sad-making as when your obnoxious upstairs neighbor who keeps you up all night doing jumping-jacks and singing off-key in the shower moves away without saying good-bye.

FTA: "I of course understand that websites like BuzzFeed need lots of advertising dollars to operate, and that no media outlets-including the one you're reading this on-are immune to advertiser pressure."

Reason #527 why I love the BBC. Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear can say a car is complete shiat and there's nothing they can do because the BBC doesn't have any advertising. On a more serious note their news and consume programmes have the same protection from interference. That's easily worth the £12 a month it costs.

/Shame BBC America has to have ads. But the BBC is not allowed to spend any licence fee money outside the UK, except for the World service.

Uh... yeah. Leaving a solid job, at that age, for an enormous paycut at the latest and faddiest internet-garbage-producer, and with 12-hour days? What the hell was this guy thinking?

I wouldn't mine if they let us comment. But it seems they're too scared to allow that, or just want all the comments/clicks themselves.

Gotta wonder if he took the 40k pay cut because he was facing a 100% pay cut at his former employer.

Something doesn't add up here other than this guy is a self-described arse to work with.

Strike 1.

I still like BuzzFeed's future.

Strike 2. And hell, Strike 3. Buzzfeed is crap. You're out!

2013-11-26 08:43:32 PM
Accepting a significant pay cut AND to work in an office where there's a 15+year age difference between you and everyone else.

This was going to end poorly in some fashion eventually.

2013-11-26 08:44:16 PM
I hate that he literally said he thought what he was doing was journalism.

The hard-working reporters covering night municipal meetings and investigating local politicians, police and criminals laugh at him.

2013-11-26 08:44:27 PM
They pay Buzzfeed writers?

2013-11-26 08:46:35 PM
I always just assumed some algorithm did 99% of the BuzzFeed content.

"[number] of [adjective] things about [activity] that only [generation] will understand"
"[number] [animals or groups of people] that just don't get it"

The more unrelated all those mad libs are, the closer to an actual BuzzFeed link you get.

Sh*t, Buzzfeed couldn't pay me enough to work for them, let alone take a pay cut and go work for them.

2013-11-26 08:57:23 PM
He's most likely single to boot. Nobody in their right mind would take that pay cut. And after looking at his list, it looks like he is NOT in his right mind ... he really needs to grow up.

11) Acting like a whiney asshat on a newsblog watched by hundreds of thousands.

I have never seen any evidence of Buzzfeed having paid staff, I thought that site was written by children.

2013-11-26 09:01:03 PM
I thought Buzzfeed was all user-generated.

Having someone make these inane lists full time seems... cruel.

As I read the rest of his post, I think "this is a person who makes a lot of mistakes in their life"

When you make a living through hatin', remember what goes around comes around.

Feck, I don't actually work 12 hour weeks. I'm present, but working hard, not so much.

I have one of those rare stainless steel/chrome Ludwig sets at my disposal.
So heavy, all the ways

This guy answered his own talking points why he got canned. Look man, Alec Baldwin might be an actor women all over the world fawn over and brings in the revenue, but eve he got canned today. Some days your level of asshole-ry is at level 12 when it should have been no more than a 7.

2013-11-26 09:18:42 PM
unlike you haters, i heard what he had to say. he's not claiming to be the high road, or that buzzfeed is inherently bad. he acknowledges that he wasn't the right fit, can at times be an overbearing asshole, and that old people etc.

however, he also specifically detested the kowtowing to advertisers and general balllessness of the place... pointedly that ben smith only has a gif of balls in place of the real thing. i find these comments to be exceedingly likely

knowing how they have a "no haters" policy might be specifically why comments are disabled on the featured partner bits they have here. i'm sure they are chagrined when someone goes ahead and links to them anyways and we get to comment on buzzfeed.

2013-11-26 09:19:38 PM

I don't always click on buzzfeed but when I do it was an accident.

/Fark them all

2013-11-26 09:29:08 PM
list forgot "get your facts straight" and "doing research"

2013-11-26 09:30:13 PM
I dunno. The guy was usually right about the ads he loved and hated, so he's got that going for him

I can imagine leaving a job you hate or you're bored with to take a lesser-paying job that you think you'd love, especially if you have a pretty good cushion. If he could take a 40g cut, I have a hunch he'd been doing very well for a long time in the ad biz.

2013-11-26 09:31:32 PM
Wait wait wait ........wait ! buzzfeed has writers ?!?I always thought it was some recoded penthouse letters creator with a image search function.

Took a pay cut with out negotiating a percentage stake, then you are an idiot,  reasons 1 through 9  ----  reason 10 - you worked for buzzfeed

2013-11-26 09:33:54 PM

spamdog: fark buzzfeed, fark gawker media, and fark this guy too.

Spamdog, I'm saying this as a concerned friend: Your libido is off the charts. Get help, man!

what_now: Ok, so you weren't good at your job, you didn't work well with other people, and you admit you are an asshole.

Sounds like he was good at his job, and hired him to write about a topic Buzzfeed decided was toxic in short order.  Still stupid to give up a higher paying job in an industry where he clicked to work for what is still basically a C-list site filled with D-list content for high school dropouts.
