I used that as a pet name for subby's mom first.

Silly Thais. If you could get away with calling your leader a "Stupid Crab biatch Water Buffalo Face," then  everybody would be doing it.

People are pissed in Thailand because they had a corrupt ruler who is now a fugitive, and his sister is trying to pardon him. It would be like if Blago absconded before his trial, and his sister got elected president and tried to pardon him.

In other words, the Thais have every right to be pissed and making light of it shows your ignorance.

It could be worse. I mean it's not like his sister is PM in name only and that Thaksin is running the country via Skype and having government officials fly out to consult with him in Dubai. Or that he's bankrolling an "army" of poor peasants who burned down a big chunk of Bangkok when they didn't get their way. Oh wait.....

Well, one thing I'm missing is how both she and her brother keep winning elections. Vote rigging? Fraud? Or is it just a case of a simple-majority democracy where the victors control everything and the minority political party gets zero power?

Thaksin's fortune.

No seriously.

Prior to the election, Thaksin's people went to small villages and Thailand and gave money to the peasants to vote for Thaksin.

In 2008 he tried to sneak back into the country when his little scheme worked the first time. When he saw that it wasn't gonna happen, he turned tail and ran. His sister tried this crap in 2011, and was met with resistance. Now she is trying again.

Notice how it is the educated and middle class that are tired of these shenanigans?

He is basically Blago times ten and the people protesting are the ones that want these scamsters and their cronies gone.

Vote buying is rampant in Thailand.  There are some places in the North East where violence was used during the last election to prevent opposition parties from being able to even campaign.  Its difficult to say who would win in a "fair" election, since Thailand has never had one.  Perhaps the PTP really does have the support of the majority, but its hard to say with any certainty with the level of corruption in the country, especially the more rural areas.   Both sides have opposed independent elections monitors.

The current protests are actually just calling for the dissolution of the current government and fresh elections.  For those not familiar with the parliamentary system of government, its fairly normal to dissolve the government and hold new elections when a large sector of the public has lost faith in the current government.   If the current government was sure they had the support of the people, you would think they would go along with new elections that would back up their claims of support and give them a mandate to hold of the opposition's heads.

Don't forget, for a lot of the rural poor, getting paid 500 baht a day (minimum wage is 300 bath/day)  to put on a red shirt and attend what is in some ways a free music festival in Bangkok, was a fantastic opportunity for them.  They were making more money than just staying at home, got to visit relatives living in Bangkok they normally can't afford to see, and got to watch to all sorts of free entertainment provided they didn't mind the occasional political speech.   How were they to know they were going to be used as human shields and as cover to burn much of the city.

Well, at least a lot of them got free iPhones and other swag when they burned and looted Central World and Siam Square.

Funny thing is, before they went all burny and looty, I could actually kind of sympathize with the Red Shirts. Not that I have any positive thoughts about Thaksin and his regime whatsoever, but rather more along the lines of the rural (and urban) poor do pretty much get shat upon, and everyone in the government is too focused on lining their pockets to notice.

I also sympathize with the Yellow shirts and agree with zeroman's post up above. The people do have every right to be pissed.

Of course, even if they get what they want and the current government gets ousted, it's still going to end up being the same old same old here with more corrupt asses putting on some sweet talk so they can get theirs and fark everyone else once in office. New boss same as the old boss and so one.

Not that this is so different from just about any other government on the planet, but with the amount of corruption here, it seems worse.

This country is a farking mess.

While what you say is true, the yellow shirts just seem to be stooges of the military and the 100 wealthy Thai families.

Moopy Mac: While what you say is true, the yellow shirts just seem to be stooges of the military and the 100 wealthy Thai families.

Both sides are proxies for different factions of wealthy Thais.  But at least at this time, the Yellows seem to be fighting against pretty obvious corruption and a potential constitutional crisis:
- The "amnesty" bill
- The refusal of the parliament to follow the rulings of the constitutional court
- Rice buying scandal

All seem to be perfectly reasonable reasons to dissolve parliament and hold new elections.  It would take a lot less than that in most western countries to hold new elections.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but to play devil's advocate, the most recent Thai constitution was put in place specifically to safeguard certain institutions (that being, the small number of wealthy families and the military) from large scale democratic upheaval allowed by the previous constitution. Hell, the junta went so far as to ban public criticism of the new constitution before the ratification vote, but at the same time linked support of it with support of the king. So fark that constitution.
