The real scandal isn't Benghazi, the real scandal is how so-called synergy has infected the news.  The only reason this story even aired on 60 Minutes was to promote a book being published by Simon & Schuster which is owned by the parent company of CBS.  So they failed to do any journalistic due diligence in order to promote a book.  This is happening more and more and this kind of cross-promotion is what needs to be investigated.

this was not a "mistake". several sites had reported this guy to be a liar way before this was broadcast. they claimed to have interviewed hundreds and took a year checking out this report and yet no one thought to read his report to the his bosses?  or look at these other websites reporting on him? or mention that CBS was publishing his book? Heads should roll. Not only Logan and her producer but their executive producer also. He had to sign off on this.

Meh she failed to make sure the story  was indeed fact , either by failing to do the necessary fact checking or by willfully ignoring facts to report a sensation story.

Fox news is gonna love her, and she will fit right in.

Hobodeluxe: OtherLittleGuy: The last Lara Logan thread had so many white knights coming out because of her sexual assault story, they took Jerusalem.

was that even true or was that another fabrication?

It was true for a little bit. Eventually the knights were losing against the Ottoman Empire and they lost Jerusalem.

whidbey: I could see her at CNN or MSNBC over Fox.

1. She's blonde
2.  She's willing to show the goods.

She'll be on FOX in a short shirt in a heartbeat.

Shakin_Haitian: Lara Logan has a vested interest in war. Her husband is a defense contractor.

he also got paid to provide pro US propaganda to middle eastern media by the Bush admin.

What most people don't know, however, is the nature of Burkett's work in Iraq. He was an employee of the Lincoln Group, a now-shuttered "strategic communications and public relations firm" hired by the Department of Defense in 2005 to plant positive stories written by American soldiers in Baghdad newspapers during the Iraq War."He did information operations," one former colleague of Burkett's told Gawker. "It was really spooky stuff. We worked with one of those special spooky IO outfits that didn't even have a unit patch." It's the kind of work for which a close relationship with an American network correspondent might come in handy. And it paid handsomely. Under an "indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract," the Pentagon promised the Lincoln Group up to $100,000,000 to assist the military's Joint Psychological Operations with controlling local media coverage of the American occupation. The Lincoln Group later became the target of congressional and Defense Department investigators over its handling of U.S. cash and its propaganda tactics.

In 2004, CBS News ran with a story about Bush's national guard service, or lack thereof. (My mother still desperately wants to believe that Bush single-handedly took Pork Chop Hill with an assault rifle in one hand, his wounded buddy slung over his shoulder, and an American flag clenched in his teeth.) The evidence in the story didn't stand up to scrutiny. In the aftermath, four producers were fired, and the anchor - a 41-year veteran of the organization - was forced to step down and eventually resign.

It didn't take long for it to become clear that this wasn't enough for the George Wills and Cal Thomases of the world, that nothing shy of a full confession of traitorous intent and a complete cessation of all broadcasting activities would suffice. The conservative media came down upon CBS News like a thunderstorm, and refused to let up for months.

They've been oddly silent about this one, I've noticed. (Lindsey Graham has done everything but pound a table sobbing "It's real to me, dammit!") There are no accusations of bias, no demands for resignations. They haven't even really brought it up. There are a few firebrands in the local paper who are just too, too upset over Obamacare to mention it, when they couldn't go five words without four of them being "Benghazi!" in previous statements.

There's a lesson to be learned there, which I'm sure they'll do their damnedest to ignore.

If she weren't raped by a bunch of Islamists while on the clock at CBS, they certainly would have s-canned her

Agreed. The mistakes involved in getting this story to air were so numerous and big that it borders on total incompetence or outright disregard for journalistic ethics. Nothing minor about it. It's kind of amazingly bad.

This sounds very much like a script from the last season of HBOs "The Newsroom,"  only there they all decided to fight the charges and the main guy got engaged to the main gal.
