Tofurkey sucks, the rest can be pretty good though. Wild rice tempeh marinated in Frank's hot sauce is a great substitute to buffalo wings, for example.

FTA:

"Overconsumption and overproduction of meat has given rise to the factory farm, which has put huge threats on the planet and our health," Prescott wrote.

That's true enough, but the solution is not to go vegan. Factory farms are a horrific blight on the planet and your body and they are inhumane beyond measure but they are very profitable. Factory farms exist because corporations were given free reign to produce the cheapest food possible. That is the USDA mission and as it turns out government is very good at it.

That aside -- there has never been a healthy vegan demographic. The idea that we can live as vegans is a myth. The nutrients you get from animal products are not optional. You can survive without them for a while but you will not be healthy and taken to extreme you will die from it.

Al Gore is a smart person and so is Bill Clinton but here they have been totally misled.

lol algore claimed he invented the internet!

/note: al gore never claimed he invented the internet. what he said was, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

according to one of the acknowledged "fathers of the internet," Vint Cerf, "While it is not accurate to say that VP Gore invented Internet, he has played a powerful role in policy terms that has supported its continued growth and application, for which we should be thankful." adding, "We're fortunate to have senior level members of Congress and the Administration who embrace new technology and have the vision to see how it can be put to work for national and global benefit."

What specific nutrients are those? I can't think of anything important you can only get from animals. Unless you count bacon.

Technically, the only one that is completely absent is Vitamin B-12. There are several others that are very hard to come by in a vegan diet, requiring either supplements or very careful and conscientious dietary  planning. these include  including iron, vitamin D, and calcium. There may be others as well, but those are the ones I remember from my very self-righteous and annoying vegan roomate many moons ago.

Vitamin B-12 only comes from animal sources. Vegetarians get it from milk and eggs but vegans need to supplement. There can also be some mineral deficiencies in a vegan diet that isn't well planned.

I'll point out that Clinton at least isn't really vegan. The stories on his diet say he eats fish once a week. That pretty much falls in line with stuff like the Blue Zone theory which shows that the healthiest populations in the world aren't vegetarian but eat very little meat (way less than most people in the West do).

Don't you understand?  We HAVE to stop criticizing Republicans for lying about Al Gore for the last 15 years.  Sure, the people complaining about criticizing Republican lies have only started to demur when it looks like the GOP might finally, actually be hurt by their dishonesty...but, that's just a coincidence.

So basically, stuff that you can easily get from various supplements. Something even most of us omnivores need to do anyways, with our crappy diets.

Here is a long and well sourced article on the subject.

There are many more. Here is one that looks interesting if a bit polemic. I haven't looked through its references much.

At the end of the day Retinol, B12, vitamin D, K2, calcium, iron, zinc are not optional and they are difficult to get for vegetarians and some are impossible for vegans.

You should probably try a bit more googling, looking up those things you mentioned, seems there's lots of non-animal sources for them. And your own body will produce retinol, from vitamin A, beta-cerotine.

I simply can't understand why ordinary people would lie to protect the argument of a political party.  Case in point:   I paid $4,000 extra dollars, last year, to fund [Obamacare]...[the IRS said, because of Obamacare, I was forced to pay $4K more in taxes last year...the IRS even sent me a bill admitting it]."

Anybody have any insight?

Long long time ago I read that if it weren't for low levels of insect contamination providing a little B12 to everyone, most vegetarians would have B12 deficiency diseases.

One can get the RDA for vitamin D by sitting out in the sun for a little while.

There was a story I can't find the reference to where someone in England hosted an embassy of Tibetan monks. The English were concerned for their health, so the monk's vegan diet was replicated in the UK to the limit of their abilities. Over not too long a time the monks fell ill. It was finally discovered that the rice they ate back in Asia had plenty of insects in it, but the English rice had better sanitation so that nutrient source was not present. Once the insects were allowed back into the grain the monks' health recovered.

I never have found out if that story is true or not and I can't remember where I read it but if anyone has heard of it please let me know.

Your body cannot produce Vitamin B12 and there is no bioavailable vegan source of it. There are supplements for it, but no natural vegan source of it.

I've read that a vegan diet is horrible for cats. They usually end up blind, with no energy, and a greatly shortened lifespan. Apparently dogs can go vegan, if done properly, but not cats.
