From the actual game-play reviews of the original game, it wasn't a bad product.  The worst complaints were that it was a bit derivative, but the game-play itself was great.

If he hadn't blown up everything by trying to turn it into an MMO as well, then they had a solid base to build on.  But they over-reached HUGE without any backup plan or ability to absorb a failure.  Big mistake.

KoA was boring. It wanted so desperately to be fallout meets elder scrolls but actiony instead.

It was just long and dull and full of pointless side quests. Plus the PC version had a cripplingly close field of vision.
