The thing is, you can't just walk into a doctor's office and get the kind of surgery we're talking about here, at least not in the US.  Maybe it's imperfect, but you actually do have to jump through a lot of hoops, even if you have the cash in hand, before a doctor is going to agree to gender reassignment.

At the end of the day, if a panel of medical professionals, educated and trained in gender issues is willing to say there's a chance this could improve your quality of life and it's something you feel you need and want to do, then I'm certainly not going to judge your or side with some slack-jawed yokel that thinks it's wrong, but can't come up with any compelling proof or evidence that it is.

And while it may be confusing to some people, though I don't know why, this has nothing to do with sexual orientation.  Being transgendered is a very different aspect of human nature.  Most gay people have no desire to change their sex and identify with their born gender.  Not everybody who is transgender identifies as gay.

So, put me down on the list of folks who say, more power to these folks.  It may not be my cup of tea, but if they're happy with themselves and each other, then I say that's a wonderful, amazing thing.

tinfoil-hat maggie: I see a lot of "Manley men" have come out to tell everyone something about gender. Of course it seems obvious if they couldn't find their penis they wouldn't know if they were a boy or a girl and as for men heh, seems obvious they aren't.

That is CISsexist

No E in manly. Not sure at all where you were headed THM, but your wording lost me, and that isn't easy to do.

"This one time, at band camp, I lost my penis. But it was just the acid, so it showed up later.
What, you don't think its fun to do acid?"

I dated a lady that had a radical hysterectomy, great in the sack and a nice woman all the way through.

Or do you believe that women who are post menopausal are all fakes?

You sound young and dumb.

Easy kiddo. I mostly only want everyone to be civil to each other. My neck-hairs get raised mostly from people behaving shiatty to each other, going on the offensive for no good reason, and forgetting we are all the same basic collection of meat-bag parts (for the greatest part).

Your gender is your business. Nobody else has a stake in that, nor should they have a say in that (and really why does anyone care?).
Upthreaders throwing the word mutilated around have no concept of surgery and surgical standards it would seem.
Mutilated it when they need to stuff your thumb-meat BACK into the skin that went POP!

As long as you are a good person and try to be a productive part of society, and you at least TRY to be a true human being that's more than enough for me.

Like I posted upthread:

gja: Not my business? check
Not costing me money? check
Not hurting me? check

Nyquil is really a poor choice. For 1 it shoves your BP through the roof, giving you a worse yet headache.
For 2 it is has alcohol, a vasodilator, MOAR headache. And dehydrates you...worse yet.
The acetaminophen content in it is less effective at fever reduction than say iboprofen or naproxen sodium.

Hydration. Bed rest (get off Fark, put the innnernets awaze). Get a warm mist humidifier (no cool mist, they mist the crap in the water along with the water, warm boils it off and the mist is sterile).

Voice of experience here. And also repackaged wisdom from doctor friends.

Try an antihistamine, no decongestants.

OT:z-pack has no effect on me, and i have a shingles flareup right now (stress in my life, divorce, new job, etc).
Augmentin@875mg for 10 days with tamiflu and famvir. I am hurting like hell, but why whine? Life could be worse.
I could be poor, homeless, cancer, alone, etc. I count my blessings, not my inconveniences.

Prophet of Loss: Loaf's Tray: Prophet of Loss: Tunacrab: LordBeavis: Kahabut: Tunacrab: Elective genital mutilation does not make you the other sex.

We live in a sick society.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^SO FARKING MUCH THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Wow, lots of hate for the transgendered community.  The Fark Libertarian tilt doesn't extend to the people that want to get their naughty bits changed?  Much like ghey people, I really don't give two craps what an adult wants to do with his/her naughty parts as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.  Yes, it's icky and not for me.  So is black licorice and blood pudding.  I'm not, however, going to condemn society as a whole because we allow people freedom.

It isn't hate... more like sadness at it's seemingly unquestioned acceptance. I'm not contending it should be illegal. If people want to do this to themselves, so be it... but it doesn't change the fact that it is a sick act.

People modify their bodies all the time for various reasons. Are tattoos sick? How about piercings? Implants?

Just because you can choose language that makes two things tangentially similar doesn't make them in any way equivalent; by that logic the fact that I eat hamburgers all the time means I should have no qualms about devouring a dead baby.

Your example is entirely subjective. People do extreme things to themselves and still live rich full lives. If the modification makes those lives happier then who are we to deny them that happiness?

My argument has nothing to do with morality, I couldn't care less what other people do to their bodies and I'm not clamoring for anyone to be denied anything, but I take issue with the stance that the "ignorant majority" needs to be better educated about how narrow-minded their idea of "normal" is through the use of false equivalencies and willful ignorance.  Do you really think that piercing your ears is in any way similar to chopping your dick off because both can be defined as "body modification"?

2013-11-27 08:25:48 AM

0z79: youmightberight: Um.

If you're born with balls your a guy.

No matter what parts you chop off.

Kinda like converting a vw bug to a "Ferrari"....still a bug.

It's actually been found that a majority of trans* people seem to have a brain closer in structure to the gender that they're transitioning to. Plus there's intersex (a bit of both sexes) conditions that can lead to an almost, but not quite boy or girl.

That's the case with yours truly; I spent the years during and post-puberty really, really wishing I'd quit becoming so masculine; after a medical examination it was found that I have such a condition.. and after speaking with several qualified counselors, I was referred to an endocrinologist.

Cue a formerly confused, unhappy person becoming more active, getting involved, and overall stepping out of their shell for the first time ever.

But hey, don't let someone with first-hand knowledge change your oh-so-righteous opinion of that subject, which I gather you know little about.

After all, you need to get yourself off somehow. :)

I still think your choice arises from an abuse of some kind but seeing as you're the expert I'll leave it.

Only you know the truth and this is the internet where anyone can claim anything with almost no repercussions.
