(Syracuse Post-Standard)   Nearly 1,000 people have been charged under the NY Safe Act in the eight months since the tougher gun control law was passed, according to the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services. The law does not take effect until January 15th 2014   (syracuse.com) divider line 100

33 were charged with having more than seven bullets inside a 10-round magazine, a violation that is the equivalent of a traffic ticket. First-time offenders face a $200 fine.

What's that officer? You have a problem with my magazine? *blam* *blam* *blam* Now I'm down to 7 bullets like you asked. Feel better?

Onondaga County Chief Assistant District Attorney Joseph Coolican added: "That doesn't mean that if I'm caught with one (now), I can't be charged,"

To be clear, you won't be able to be prosecuted, but they can get all sorts of court costs and fines out of you until then. Which is all they really want anyway.

Reducing violent crime is too important a cause to be concerned about whether a given law is actually in effect, or whether unreasonable firearm restrictions will actually cause any change in crime rates.

20 people have been charged with a part of the law that isn't enforcable until 2014, but there is apparently legal debate about that.

"People who owned these guns before Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the act on Jan. 14 have until April 15, 2014 to register them with the state. Still, seven people have been charged with failing to register their assault weapons, according to the DCJS stats "

How are they being charged with a crime when they still have another farking 5 months to register them?

Obvious abuse of governmental power FTW, I guess.

Any individual carrying a firearm magazine loaded with more than seven rounds of ammunition is clearly intent upon committing mass murder and should be arrested and detained regardless of the law. Otherwise, the law would not have been passed.

We aren't.  That is, the ones NOT in the Governor's mansion in Albany that whored out a school shooting to further their careers, aren't anyway.  Funny how this act was so poorly written that it didn't even exempt police at first, but they sure made resolution of that right quick.  fark you Cuomo.

The law was written to prohibit possession of firearms and firearm accessories that serve absolutely no purpose except to commit mass murder. The need for a police exemption is therefore obvious and understandable.

But police are different. They are highly trained and rack up thousands of hours of combate simulation and marksmenship practice over the course of a year. Plus, some NYPD end up on men in black. They are professional and responsible enough to hand such dangerous weapons.

Also, please ignore that other thread where I called police right wing bullies.

If firearm owners fail to comply with every regulation, then they are not "law-abiding". If they are in compliance, then clearly new laws are needed to remedy the situation.

They are made in the Philippines, they are sturdy but have the finish you would expect for a $399. 1911 -which means they are not smooth, if you have some basic skills and polishing stones you can make them nice if not you will pay a gunsmith to do it and end up with $800.00 pistol. I would suggest checking out the Tarus 1911s you can find them for under $600 in a lot of places; mine was out of the box as smooth as some of the $1000 US made 1911s were

I see you missed the part where people are being arrested for laws that aren't laws yet.

As well as the Heller and McDonald SCOTUS rulings that say New York's SAFE act is sickeningly unconstitutional and will wither and die the moment it hits an appeals court outside of Cuomo's reach.

You also sound like the kind of fool that scolded Jews for not wearing their yellow stars, not because they were Jews, but because "these are the rules".

Remember...you get what you pay for. My first was a S & W SD 40 VE....of ~$360.00 (.40 cal). I then looked at 1911's as a second gun...they are very heavy...decided to go with a Glock 21 4th Gen (.45 cal)....a little under $800.00. The Glock is so much better (15 round mags) and lighter that I really don't like my .40 cal anymore.

Go to a gun range and rent a bunch of handguns and test them out ahead of time.

If you want a 1911(gi sights, no beaver tail, right handed only, etc), or as close as you can get without shelling out for the new Colt the RIA is a good buy.

It comes lowered and flared, beveled mag well, short trigger, flat MSH, parkerized.

If you want better sights, beaver tail, ambi safety RIA makes a tactical line, but you can get more options at the same price if you shop Taurus or used basic model Paras.

Thing with the 1911 is it's only as reliable as the magazines you feed it with, and being an actual CRF (at least originally), it is sensitive to out of spec magazines. And since *everybody* makes 1911 magazines there are more than enough out of spec magazines floating around.

Read up on 1911 mag variants and feed lip massaging/bending. Understand the issues the 1911 can have and it'll save you a world of frustration if you get one that seems to not like a certain make, or even individual, magazine.

the way this law is written technically a nail gun is an assault weapon. Every cop I have talked to so far said that it is useless and will have no results other than generating revenue. I am waiting for some small town sheriff to bring the swat team to Home Depot and make arrest for all the illegal firearms.
